Excellent #bookpost yesterday from @eandtbooks.bsky.social! Mother Animal by @helenjukes.bsky.social is out on the 27th and I am already stuck in for #readindies. Lifelines by @julianhoffman.bsky.social comes out on 15 May. Both were on my Most Anticipated list for the first half of the year.

Three antidotes to despair: community, local activism, restoring nature.

Have a wee vote, folks! Be assured it's not me, Liz Lochhead and Jackie Kay in competition with each other - god forbid! It's you choosing a line by each of us to be carved on the Parliament Wall. www.scottishpoetrylibrary.org.uk/2025/02/publ...

Some news! My debut essay collection, Portrait of an Island on Fire, will be published by Fitzcarraldo Editions in June 2025.

Sigh. Keeping an eye on the sad sad menchildren and their busy, brittle delusions is tiring. The world is so full of smarter, more interesting people doing wonderful, thoughtful, creative, important work. And who deserve our time and consideration.

Seems important now to mention that the "luxury resort" set to destroy this ecosystem is a Kushner-Trump development.

~3000 years in use: Kazarma Bridge is a Mycenaean bridge near the modern road from Tiryns to Epidauros on the Peloponnese, Greece. Dating to the Greek Bronze Age, it is one of the oldest arch bridges. Built in the late Late Helladic III (ca. 1300–1190 BC), the bridge is still used by the locals!

Given that whales have been around far longer than humans it might be more accurate to say that human languages have patterns that resemble humpback whale songs. www.newscientist.com/article/2467...

On the lookout for a white-tailed sea eagle seen by a friend around the lake last week but some days, like today, it doesn't seem to matter whether you see anything at all.

And, she's out of the starting gate! My next book, GREYHOUND, is coming out August 14 in the US with Soft Skull Press & on August 12 in the UK with Fitzcarraldo Editions.
