A loss of vegetation can cause a super severe and long-lasting hyperthermal, like after the Permian-Triassic mass extinctiomn. And an incomplete recovery could even cause a shift into a warmer climate steady state!

Applying an eco-evolutionary vegetation and carbon cycle model to different Phanerozoic LIPs, we find that the capacity of vegetation to adapt through evolution or to disperse in a specific paleogeography can result in a large range of possible climate trajectories!
