This piece of gossip made me chuckle

Oh yeah, pictures. Go on

Wow, isn’t the future amazing! > www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

That a nation’s economy is just like household budget

I was a bit taken aback to read CAMRA's assessment of my latest What's Brewing column, but obviously delighted. I hope you read it & it makes you feel uncomfortable. Please consider why it makes you feel uneasy while drinking the @ladiesofdarkness.bsky.social beers. wb.camra.org.uk/2025/02/03/t...

Messed up my attempt to post this this morning so hopefully this is free to read. A view of the Labour growth agenda from outside of London - currently out of fashion, but doubtless it will be back on trend again at some point on.ft.com/4gFieBd

Painted by John Atkinson Grimshaw just two years before his death in 1891. Perhaps the best comment on his work came from James McNeill Whistler, whom Grimshaw worked with in his Chelsea studios. He said, "I considered myself the inventor of nocturnes until I saw Grimmy's moonlit pictures."

Two really insightful reads. Differing opinions on how the State can facilitate/ get out the way. Such a huge opportunity not just for the North but the UK. Why don’t Labour JFDI?

Why is North England poor? If policy is to improve prosperity in this part of the country then it needs to remove the barriers that stop export businesses from investing. Read our latest blog from @paulswinney.bsky.social 👇

The relative underperformance of North England is a mystery Are top honours winners too posh and too southern? www.bbc.com/news/article...

I’d wondered about this. Over and above the legality it’s a shame the reporter didn’t question the ethics of advertising something highly addictive on a high energy consuming medium www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

Stay well, feel as positive as you can. Today we get 8:18:13 of daylight. Tomorrow we get 3m59s more than today. If you can, take a stroll, breathe some air, get some light on your face. #daylightbot

I’m tired of hearing about bats. Do you want to hear a story about jumping spiders and the town that disappeared? I think I might be breaking this story – do come be the first to read it.

A weirdly therapeutic part of coding is watching a super efficient script run like the clappers

The LGA are working with @open-innovations.org to find examples of where decentralised approaches have worked better than centralised approaches to policy and delivery (and vice versa). More info here 👇

One of many hills I’ll die on: Unless it’s a major cross roads or cul-de-sac then side roads on key arterial routes should be closed

Good deed for the day was paying someone on the bus whose card was playing up. In the muddle I paid by card for two forgetting I’d launched my ticket 🙄

The Lothians; today had 3m37s more daylight than yesterday and tomorrow will have more (3m41s). #daylightbot

Essential reading on why the North of England has become so poor. Some deep historical reasons, & some very bad policy decisions in the last 40 years

The cat just burped and then looked around to see where the noise came from

Todays good deed was helping a delivery robot back onto the ‘sidewalk’. It was very thankful #ffswhythehelldidntwefilmit

I know neither de Molen or Magic Rock were the same after their respective sales but so sad to see the breweries closing. They were the stand outs of last decades beer scene. No one else came close

It's not finished. This is just the outline. But I wrote about why North England is poor. Which it really really is. tomforth.co.uk/whynorthengl...

Is there a podcast or news website that’s sorting the avalanche of policy announcements from over the pond into that’s a) just bluster b) really happening?

On the value of Twitter, btw - We had similar traffic from Bluesky, where the FT has 300 thousand followers, to what came from Twitter, where we supposedly have 6 million.

A stark legacy of austerity. Whether you think it was necessary or not it was done in an incredibly damaging way.
