Here's what we're reading today: The U.S. has reportedly demanded control of a key pipeline in Ukraine that used to transport Russian gas to Europe. This follows U.S.-Ukraine talks on Friday about a proposed mineral deal, in which the U.S. demands more than the previous draft.

L - The official photo from the Kremlin of US Special Envoy @SteveWitkoff putting his hand over his heart as he greets his friend Vladimir Putin again this week. R - Putin’s latest missile attack killing at least 21 people, including 7 children, on Palm Sunday. Putin’s stooge.

🔴 A sudden Russian missile strike on Sumy killed 31 people—including 2 children—and injured 84. The ballistic missiles hit without warning, striking a city-center trolleybus and leaving no time to seek shelter. (1/2)

Don't overlook this: Trump is leaving Abrego Garcia to rot in a foreign gulag even though the admin can always bring him back and *retry him for deportation in a lawful way.* That they won't do this shows their case against him is nonsense. New piece from me: newrepublic.com/article/1939...

The crypto ethos of "I am allowed to break the law because internet" is so nuts. But this kid is right: It is now the de facto policy of the U.S. government. www.theglobeandmail.com/gift/8b77af9...

The absolute ghouls over at Robert F. Kennedy Jr's Children's Health Defense are deflecting blame for spreading anti-science bullshit about the measles MMR vaccine by blaming the doctors for these kids' deaths.

NEW: DOGE and a handful of Palantir representatives, along with career IRS engineers, have been collaborating to build a single API layer above all IRS databases at an event previously characterized to WIRED as a “hackathon,” sources tell WIRED. This is from @makenakelly.bsky.social

when/if Trump ever leaves office, we need to delete the records of this stuff. future generations will never stop making fun of us for letting this happen.

This is, as the Independent points out, Russia's negotiating position. These four oblasts aren't even occupied — they're *partially* occupied. Witkoff is proposing Ukraine surrender territory *it still holds.*

On my first read of this story I totally missed the White House's plan to bribe each Greenlander with $10,000 to annex the island. Good god. www.nytimes.com/2025/04/10/u...

So I think the media (and bluesky) is a good barometer of the institutional and liberal response to Trump. But this video is a good window into the IRL/normie popular response. youtu.be/DwMzCjibxT4?...

I don't doubt that some countries are anxious to get a deal: Israel, Taiwan, Vietnam, etc. But any deal that rich countries sign is going to be worse than the pre-Trump status quo. That's why you're seeing informal pacts — Can/Mex/Europe, SK/Japan/China — forming to resist the prisoner's dilemma.

Amid everything else, we are 10 days away from the end of Trump's 90 day review period on foreign aid and assistance. At the end of next week, the White House is likely to announce a whole new wave of cuts — not just aid, but all sorts of programs abroad.

we're onto the politically-motivated prosecutions portion of today's programming. www.nextgov.com/people/2025/...

the U.S. government is gouging itself to gut itself

never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by malicious stupidity.

What a curveball: White House tells us Canada and Mexico are also getting the 10% global tariff. This is new. So one-size-fits all. What we don't know yet: Whether the older tariffs on Canada and Mexico (autos, steel, aluminum, 'fentanyl') continue and get stacked onto this. 1/2

in hindsight, sending timetravelling assassin Leon Czolgosz back in time to shoot William McKinley may have been a mistake.

Incredibly, in his abrupt reversal on trade policy, Trump seemingly just *increased* tariffs on Mexico and Canada to 10%. Until today, the U.S. has only had 25% tariffs on Canadian steel, aluminium, and autos, plus 10% on energy and potash. (With the caveat that it's 0% for USMCA-compliant trade.)

So, just to recap, Trump's tariffs: -Were reciprocal for other nations' tariffs -Ok, were actually reciprocal for non-tariff barriers -Nevermind, they're about closing trade deficits -Aren't negotiable -Ok, ARE negotiable, but only for cash -nevermind back to 10% across-the-board

chaos, 90 days at a time

NEW: 404 Media has seen parts of a Palantir-powered ICE database that allows for highly specific filtering of people, which allows for searches of students, people with tattoos, from specific countries, by visa status, etc: www.404media.co/inside-a-pow...

What's the Trump exit strategy for this calamity? White House is clearly trying to strongarm the Fed into a rate cut, which they'll probably(?) get. I imagine we'll see a huge income tax cut to pour some sugar into the economy. But none of this changes mothballed factories and spiking prices.
