The two worst people you know are getting married. www.sportico.com/business/com...

This week’s You’re Probably Getting Screwed is about the unlikely playbook the FTC has given to state legislators looking to protect workers from monopoly power. youtu.be/m5fuuwbKwGU?...

A really great CLE organized by @agellison.bsky.social office to discuss consolidation in the seed industry! #BreakEmUp www.ag.state.mn.us/Office/CLE/D...

Anticompetitive behavior doesn’t just impact consumers, it’s a real threat to workers as well. www.startribune.com/jennie-o-tys...

Great 15 minutes on why the decline of small business is a a big problem and how the revival of a key antitrust law could make all the difference. Full conversation here: youtu.be/pi2vnhD0ZCU?...

Thanks to @ronmknox.bsky.social for chatting about the importance of small businesses with me. Full interview is at screwed.substack.com/p/youre-prob....

Wrote about why we should care about the decline of small businesses. screwed.substack.com/p/youre-prob...

democrats won’t admit it, but my family’s economic outlook has gotten a LOT better since Trump took office. but what do i know? i don’t have a fancy economics degree, i’m just a regular guy who runs an airplane scrapyard

Pretty damn good framing for Dems

#Datacenters are among the most subsidized industries in #Washington state. Local communities are on an “energy cliff.” Now the Gov. is forming a team to evaluate their impact. This follows a story by @sydbrownstone.bsky.social & Lulu Ramadan 4 @propublica.org and @seattletimes-rss.bsky.social

These companies want to be “non-banks” that can accept deposits of your money and then not have any legal obligations to protect it—which lets them use it to speculate on crypto etc—and not have FDIC insurance. They need to kill the cfpb to do that.

No better way to combat the influence of the bro-ligarchs threatening democracy than by lavishing them with an unknown amount of taxpayer money. #mnleg 🤦‍♂️🥴

Four years and still probably the nicest thing the internet has done for me.

“I’m concerned these tariffs will lead to a drop in farm income and force farmers off the land. We need more farmers, not fewer farmers.” MFU Pres. Gary Wertish spoke against across-the-board tariffs today during a press conference hosted by @amyklobuchar.com + MN Building & Construction Trades.

Proud to meet w @angiecraigm.bsky.social She is a great #ProtectMedicaid champion. We talked about all of the healthcare jobs at stake in her district.

"We want no economic or political dictatorship imposed upon us either by the government or by big business. We want no system of detailed regulation of prices by the government nor price-fixing by private interests. We do not want bureaucracy or regimentation of any kind . . .”

Can’t top the bro-ligarchs, but the MLB Exec Council is trying. What a bunch of “mostly” cheap ass billionaires.

by @justinofmn.bsky.social "Musk’s actions have drawn lawsuits, but as journalist Luke Goldstein wrote in a piece on Musk’s power a couple years ago, 'If federal regulators had done their job, we would never have gotten to the point where one fickle titan has so much unfettered power'"

Elon sucks.

Wrote this week about Elon’s monopoly power and how poor policy decisions lead us to this point. open.substack.com/pub/screwed/...

Brought some farmers to the Capitol today. Right to repair and antitrust among the issues on the docket!

I realize I’m biased, but I don’t know, feels like there is a possible narrative here to build. 🤷‍♂️ But I’m just an idiot populist heckler so what do I know. Best to just keep doing what we’ve been doing I guess, seems to be working great.

Huge lawsuit from the FTC & @agellison.bsky.social targeting the monopoly on repair that leaves farmers paying higher prices and fewer choices. Lina Khan working up to the very end! #BreakEmUp www.theverge.com/2025/1/15/24...

Dream team!

I interviewed Pat Garofalo (Director of State and Local Policy at the American Economic Liberties Project) about his 2025 State Legislative and Policy Preview. You’re Probably Getting Screwed also started a book club! Check it out 👇 open.substack.com/pub/screwed/...

Can America Survive The Techbro Midlife Crisis?

“Some cite lower cooling costs from Minnesota’s weather, access to fiber infrastructure, the Twin Cities’ strong workforce and proximity to the large metro area.” Yet despite this we still shower Bog Tech in $100M of wasteful subsidies every year!

State policy can be an effective tool for fighting monopoly power, but legislators need to hear about the issue from someone other than Big Tech lobbyists. open.substack.com/pub/screwed/...

What are the ways forward for climate action under Trump? National policy is foreclosed. But a lot can happen at the state and local level. @aldasky.bsky.social and I argue that we must embrace green economic populism, tackling the cost-of-living crisis and the climate crisis together 🧵

Join ILSR and @stateinnovation.bsky.social next week for a lively discussion about how states can advance the antitrust movement. The program includes a fireside chat between Attorneys General @agellison.bsky.social and @krismayes.bsky.social, moderated by ILSR’s @stacyfmitchell.bsky.social. 1/2

If you doubt the importance of states in fighting monopoly power, one of the nation’s top antitrust enforcers emphatically disagrees. #BreakEmUp

Today's Missing Middle: @carastern and I talk to @VassB and @denisehearn_ about corporate consolidation, the kayfabe nature of grocery store product competition and their new book 'The Big Fix'. Episode is free, as always, on YouTube: youtu.be/Uz5DkpZPH2k

So much that states can do to beat back corporate power. A fantastic overview of some of those options from @pat-garofalo.bsky.social. open.substack.com/pub/boondogg...

I remain steadfastly opposed to predatory mobile sports-betting for exactly this reason: it’s a predatory industry. Our neighbors (Wisconsin, North Dakota and South Dakota) prohibit predatory mobile sports-betting and if MN legalizes, we should follow suit.

🚨IMPORTANT ACTION ALERT🚨 There is a real risk Congress passes only a straight farm bill extension with NO economic assistance package before leaving DC for the year. Contact your members of Congress NOW in support of economic assistance at the link below👇 actionnetwork.org/letters/tell...

One of the biggest hurdles to this is the market power that big-box retailers use to win favorable conditions from suppliers and by extension jack up rates on independents, even city-owned ones. It's why the FTC is suing a major alcohol distributor today. prospect.org/economy/2024...

In 1936, Congress passed a law to level the playing field for rural grocers. For 25 years the government didn't enforce it. Today, FTC is suing Southern Glazer's so mom & pop grocery & liquor stores get the same discounts as their billionaire competitors. www.ftc.gov/news-events/...

Not only did the FTC win its case against this grocery mega-merger, but so did Washington state! #BreakEmUp www.atg.wa.gov/news/news-re...

One private equity backed company now owns just shy of a third of all affiliated minor league baseball teams. #BreakEmUp

Really enjoying everyone sharing their FanGraphs Walk-Off awards. You wonderful sickos.

Gail Slater’s nomination to succeed Jonathan Kanter as head of the DOJ Antitrust Division is encouraging. She has a long track record as a strong advocate for tough antitrust enforcement — which has bipartisan support in Congress and with the public.

At least 14 billionaires are set to be part of the Trump team. His administration will be by far the wealthiest ever assembled. It will shatter the previous record, held by Trump's first administration. www.axios.com/2024/12/06/t...

Just a total mystery why ppl are so angry.

I know somebody died but that doesn’t mean you have to say nice things about health insurance companies. They won’t approve your claims. They will fuck you though.

Excited to be partnering with Small Business Majority for a webinar on how monopoly power is impacting small businesses and what we can do about it in MN! Please join us!

I am often told that voters don’t care or understand antimonopoly issues. Yet over the holiday my brother complained about a job offer with a 5-year noncompete, my wife’s cousin railed against Koch’s fertilizer acquisitions and my mother-in-law lamented the dollar store in town.

1. The conventional explanation for food deserts—that these places are too poor or too rural to generate enough spending on groceries, or too Black to overcome racist corporate redlining — fail to grapple with a key fact: food deserts didn’t used to exist. My new piece in The Atlantic.

While you pay more, farmers see less and less. #BreakEmUp open.substack.com/pub/screwed/...

“Deal season is back. That’s the sentiment of many on Wall Street who expect Donald Trump’s re-election to trigger a new wave of merger activity.” Populism! 🤦‍♂️ fortune.com/2024/11/24/m...
