Despite losing the federal election, the brand of politics Pierre Poilievre has developed and refined, rooted in reactionary Friedmanite neoliberal ideology, is here to stay. And Mark Carney’s technocratic brand of neoliberalism will do little to contest it.

With all sincerity, Elections Canada is a national treasure. - Voting typically takes less than 15 minutes - We make it easy for citizens to vote, without cumbersome registration hurdles - We have every reason to trust that ballots will be counted fairly, and results reported swiftly

Mark Carney talks a lot about nation-building projects. A sovereign, public cloud could easily fit into that agenda.

Week 230 of reminding @govnl.bsky.social that long term mental healthcare needs to be more accessible.

I'm pleased to report that the Cursed project page is now live on @nichecanada.bsky.social. This project is funded by a Social Science and Humanities Research Council Insight Development Grant. niche-canada.org/cursed-how-t...

If you're in the St. John's area, join @independentnl.bsky.social Monday night for our 2025 Federal Election Night Watch Party at Spirit Music Bar (164 Water Street). Democracy &individualism aren't compatible, so come join other community members and share the experience. Plz help spread the word!

Week 229 of reminding @govnl.bsky.social that long term mental healthcare needs to be more accessible.

"How will I vote? I have wavered over the last several weeks. But I’ve also known for weeks what I think is the right thing for me to do: to vote for the party I want and for the values I believe in. In my case, those are the values of the NDP," writes Lisa Moore. theindependent.ca/commentary/t...

“Are we building for cars or people?” Christopher Ballard spoke to local urbanist @mylesrussellnl.bsky.social for this article about how St. John’s should build new denser urban housing while reducing the city’s car-dominant culture by ditching parking minimums.

It’s day 23 of the federal election campaign, which means election day is just two weeks away! As usual, the leaders vying for your vote have been busy little bees — we've got drama involving buttons, Canadian DOGE, and Tout Le Monde en Parle. Oh, and the girls, as they say, are fighting:

Hi. Hello. It's us again @govnl.bsky.social!! Here with your 228th reminder that long term mental healthcare needs to be more accessible even when it's cold and disgusting out.

One would think that with Health Accord NL’s focus on the social determinants of health the gov’t would be all over this federal program 🤷

Here is my latest -- an ode to this moment we're in, as old structures self-immolate and new ones rise from their ashes, as power tries to destroy its critics, but the critics refuse to cower. On journalism in Canada, and media owners, and how fucked they are noraloreto.substack.com/p/the-new-me...

Me talking to CBC about theft of writers’ work to train AI (video version linked below): www.cbc.ca/news/canada/...

Hey NL parents: rumours say kids are running around town saying the N-word. Quick reminder: not appropriate in ANY context. Not in quotes, not in singing lyrics, not in the classroom, not in the schoolyard, not anywhere. Not sure how to talk to your white kids about race? Some links below to start

This is so awful. St. John's author Trudy Morgan-Cole was horrified to find out she is one of millions of authors whose work is being used to train Meta's AI language model. "Writers have been given no opportunity to say yes or no, and certainly no compensation," she said. www.cbc.ca/news/canada/...

Extreme inequality in Canada is fueled both by the super-rich at the very top and growing divides in the housing market amid a shortage of homes. We need to rein in billionaire power and build homes for all. My latest in @jacobinmag.bsky.social jacobin.com/2025/04/cana...

A petition criticizing CTV for caving in to political pressure and demanding they bring back Rachel Gilmore’s fact-checking segment has received several hundred signatures: www.change.org/p/petition-t...

“Votes though, don’t matter. Forty years of neoliberalism has rendered our votes meaningless. The Liberals and the Conservatives are two sides of the same coin and that coin is in the back pocket of the elites. Our vote will not change that. Our actions beyond the ballot box will.”

If you are worried about disinformation and media manipulation in this election give a pass to @ctvyourmorning.bsky.social They caved to pressure from Pierre Poiievre's online posse in their continual harassment of @rachelgilmore.bsky.social She is a truth teller. CTV is not.

Conservatives confident attacking female journalist will distract from Poilievre’s comments about women’s “biological clocks”

When the far right chased me off of CBC, it was because I was "unfit" to give analysis about Islamophobia. I went from being regularly on their platforms to absolutely nothing for years. And why? Because the Rebel News had me marked as an enemy and swarmed the corportion. This was in 2017.

CTV is spineless! How can you hold owner to account or even pretend you do serious journalism when you won’t stand up to trolls? How can you possibly believe you are well-informed if you get your ‘news’ from wimpy outlets like this? SPINELESS!

NEW: CTV cancelled a fact-checking segment in response to political pressure from Pierre Poilievre’s Conservatives An audio recording obtained by PressProgress shows CTV cancelled an ‘election misinformation’ segment with journalist Rachel Gilmore after online backlash from conservatives

More non-profit housing, please! spacing.ca/toronto/2025...

The Fraser Institute, 🇨🇦 's leading rt-wing think tank & amp for all things libertarian/CPC, received $9,848,325 from 2019-2023 from sources outside of 🇨🇦 according to CRA records. In the past, the Koch bros were big donors. Wonder who's on the current donor list? Foreign interference much? #cdnpoli

Unless they build these homes in a not-for-profit model, no they will not.

… and many of these models often have very simplified representations of the cascading brake downs of ecosystem functions as the planet warms. My educated guess would be that if we improve the representation of these indirect effects in the models, economic impacts would appear even more severe. 👇👇

This is week 226 of reminding @govnl.bsky.social that long term mental healthcare needs to be more accessible!

Mark Carney announces a $35B plan to build at least 500,000 homes per year. The plan cites Wartime Housing as the inspiration, but says NOTHING about whether the new homes will be social housing (as Wartime units were) or private.

CBC does an entire story on the workforce without talking to any workers or discussing worker pay. Summary: Work harder! Expect less! Die poor, and ideally on the job!
