We have had highly effective vaccines against measles since 1963. That is 62 years! Allowing a measles outbreak to spread unchecked as though this is a new and unknown infection is a choice. A cruel and morally bankrupt choice that harms innocent children. #Measles #Texas

Morning - Rise up & resist! Today, let's focus on what we can control. Remembering that our purpose fuels our resilience & resistance. They want us to be fearful; worrying about the future. Bc in fear, we're not living in the moment. We're unable to help now when we're spiraling. #tgif

riding the cta brown line out of downtown chicago from adams/wabash to armitage

I talked to Black and brown veterans who are raising awareness about veterans who've been deported to their birth country. thetriibe.com/2025/02/blac... “No immigrant is safe, not even those that serve in the United States Armed Forces. If you were not born in the US, you are a target.”

Here's a laugh for the entomologists out there.

How does having trained staff at places like DHS, DOEd, DHHS, & DOC protect Americans? Without them, we couldn't fight child abuse, prosecute CSAM traffickers, & prevent early deaths. Your federal government is a cooperative of highly skilled, dedicated citizens who work to protect kids everyday.

Ending the week with a little motivation from our office mural. 💙 We hope you all have a great weekend. 🦈

If I had a band or a label, I would do a punk cover of "No More Kings" from Schoolhouse Rock. And then I would gather a bunch of people to write a whole album of next-generation Schoolhouse Rock songs, with songs about Social Security and Medicaid and NOAA. I am not kidding in the least.

The root that tears apart your foundation begins as a seed of distrust, hate, and blame. The seed that grew into a dictatorship in Europe didn’t arrive overnight. It started with everyday Germans mad about inflation and looking for someone to blame.

Book bans impact public libraries & bookstores, but it’s school libraries where they are rampant ❤️‍🩹 Many kids are unable to make it to the public library. They can’t drive, often times the library isn’t in walking distance. It’s not that their grown-ups don’t want them to be library kids. 🧵 1/11

bunny shaw scores and sends a message

I feel like I'm going insane every time I see a media story about DOGE that doesn't also mention the fact that the Government Accountability Office exists and performs the exact function that DOGE pretends to, only in a credibly constitutional, non-partisan, and conflict-of-interest-free manner

“Let them suffer the consequences of their actions.” I see this so much in my mentions, often from anonymous accounts who could be bots or ops for all I know, but whatever they are, they are trying to normalize a false bifurcation. If “they” are suffering, so are people you consider to be “us.”

It's incredibly disheartening to hear about dedicated public health professionals getting mass-laid off from CDC. Including first year epidemic intelligence service officers. This program has been the backbone of outbreak investigations in US since 1951. Decimating this workforce makes us less safe.

Vaccines DO NOT cause autism. But what the autistic people in your life hear when you spread that widely debunked misinformation is that you would prefer to have a child die a painful death from eradicated communicable disease than to be like them. That's nasty work. Hope this helps!

I am done being sad about anti-DEI measures & am solidly back in the succeeding-by-spite mode. It got me through undergrad, & grad school, & my postdoc & my first asst prof position. Want me to jump through hoops for funding? Fine. I'll jump over the hoops & teach the next gen how to do it too.

A bunch of people have sent me this. I just want everybody to know this is NOT my fault. (This time.)

Final thoughts on Super Bowl LIX… Hurts was terrific. The Eagles coaches were excellent. Talent discrepancy was stark on both sides of the ball. But most importantly… TRENCH PLAY MATTERS.

This is also why y'all think tattling to a judge or court or whomstever is going to be the thing that saves you. You'e never had to cope with every system turned against you, so you're still looking for a friendly referee to hand you the win.

Under fascism, no one is safe. Universities stayed quiet as the admin targeted DEI & foreign aid, censored research, etc. Now, they face devastating cuts to indirect cost rates, threatening research & operations. Silence won’t protect institutions. It won’t protect people; it never does.

My heart goes out to colleagues in STEM, and to all of higher ed right now. This admin is Not Good for us. Still, I can't help but wish folks had cared when it was the Rest of Us in the crosshairs. I can't get over the idea that many were OK with us being attacked by the far right because "DEI."

Part of thriving under collapse has to be to mourn the life that you thought you'd be able to live. That will take a while. Most of us are not there yet.

I have a confession . . . I was an “overhead cost”. I was a beaker washer, agar plate pourer, research secretary. I was paid by “overhead cost” fees. Loved it. Those “overhead cost” jobs allowed this rural kid to become a physician. Please tag how #OverheadCostJob impact u.

How Capping NIH Indirect Costs at 15% Hurts Science, Jobs, and Public Health 1/ The new cap to indirect costs at 15% on NIH grants may sound like a way to cut wasteful spending. In reality, it would devastate biomedical research, slow medical breakthroughs, and cost jobs. Y'all know I love a good 🧵
