They don't have to leave, that means it's time for a re-listen! I'm going through again right now, and it's AMAZING on subsequent reads. The amount of things that are shown or hinted at or set up early on that don't pay off until books later... WOW. I'm enjoying it more than the first listen.

I think he was retiring when he passed. There's always been the theory that his suicide note was actually a retirement letter, and the postscript on it was added after the fact. If you read it with that context, it seems possible.
