Typical liberal fearmongering. What Elon means is that healthcare budget analyst can be reassigned to mining rare earth materials for Tesla batteries. Preferably in Greenland.

Spoiler: Without the support of the US military, the Constitution is worthless.

People missing the flip side of this: Of course Bukele will refuse to repatriate someone if he knows Trump *doesn’t* want him to.

100%. It really is time to go there. Again.

I’m curious if Roberts genuinely thought that Trump would comply with his 9-0 decision. Because John Roberts’ level of credulity is going to determine a lot of outcomes in the very near future.

They’ll do it in a few high profile cases to set examples. People will say, “No way this holds up in court.” Maybe. But we now know the plan: they’ll do it first, then dare the courts to stop them. And this too will be very difficult for courts to undo. This is end of democracy stuff.

This is absolutely essential from @benjaminwittes.bsky.social

i have argued before that MAGA is recapitulating antebellum pro-slavery ideas about citizenship and bodily autonomy. one thing i am also thinking about, when it comes to the rendition of people to a foreign gulag, is the way it is reminiscent of the kidnapping of free blacks for sale into slavery

yeah, weird that the left wasn’t present at the Fourteen Words conference

"The bond market is not like the Supreme Court, or Paul Weiss, or Columbia University, or any of the other institutions Trump has conquered, co-opted, or corrupted." "He cannot scare it into submission. He cannot bribe it." from @jvl.bsky.social www.thebulwark.com/p/trump-fina...

New York's famed Neue Galerie specializes in Austrian art. But conservatives say there's one famous Austrian artist whose work has been excluded from the museums's collection for purely political reasons.

“Accidentally”

HAPPENING NOW: Following the Supreme Court's decision requiring the government to "facilitate" the release of Abrego Garcia, a hearing before Judge Paula Xinis is about to begin. I'm in Greenbelt, Maryland for @lawfare.bsky.social Follow along for updates

The bond market can't be intimidated, corrupted, or coopted. It has no sentimental attachment to "norms." It is a remorseless, cold-blooded machine which measures risk. And unlike SCOTUS, Paul Weiss, and other institutions, it understands exactly what time it is. www.thebulwark.com/p/trump-fina...

If this was a 1970s conspiracy thriller, Abrego Garcia would simply disappear because then govt's legal problem goes away. But I'm sure that won't happen here.

The Harvard Extension School strikes again.

My Australian friend: How is this not insider trading? How is this legal at all? Me: You sound like someone living in a democracy. Adorable.

"Do not worry, fellow investors," implored* JPMorgan CEO Jamie Dimon. "The Fed will save us from the economy-damaging, country-harming, very stupid actions of the president I endorsed, promoted, cheered, and chastised people for criticizing. This is why I get paid so much." *joking, made up quote

Within less than 24 hours of each other. I wonder if they even realize these are connected.

I was told these people were “free speech absolutists”

Here’s a problem: The President’s negotiations with foreign heads of state are covered by executive privilege. So if Trump tells the court, “I tried but there’s nothing I can do,” there’s no way to review or verify what he actually did (if anything).

The problem with this ruling is the presumption of regularity. In any other administration, a remand with instructions to facilitate Abrego Garcia’s return would lead to honest representations about what is—and isn’t—possible. In this administration, there’s no reason to expect straight answers.

If it weren't for the tariffs, this would be one of the biggest stories right now.

Literally

I am not a lawyer, but this seems to say less than people may want to say.

The NYT is a joke.

This is a joke, right? I can't make myself click.

“Since being sworn in, he has spent a remarkable amount of time in the public conversation, trying to calm his social media skeptics. His pleas for patience come amid growing frustration among the MAGA grassroots over the job he and FBI Director Kash Patel are doing.”

Yes, Jason, but maybe things that aren't top of mind for Real Americans are important anyway?

But don't worry. All of the human beings we sent to El Salvador are absolutely, super-duper guilty.

Art of the deal!

Declaring victory is one of Trump's superpowers. It doesn't fool the rest of the world, but half of America it works every time. I don't see why this time would be different.

If Bukele decided to liquidate the inmates shipped to El Salvador by the US, is there anything in US law which could stop it? Would the US govt have an interest in stopping it? If not, then why couldn't the US outsource extra-legal killings to another country? www.thebulwark.com/p/concentrat...

US law is clear that America cannot put people in gulags indefinitely, without due process. US law is less clear on whether or not America can pay a foreign country to run a gulag system on its behalf. www.thebulwark.com/p/concentrat...

Someone explain to me the limiting principle on the Trump admin's claims that (1) It can grab people off the street and ship them to El Salvador w/out due process and (2) Once this individual is in CECOT, there's nothing the US govt can do about it? www.thebulwark.com/p/concentrat...
