Corruption is the most important story in the world, part 211

Suggestions for a three-pronged strategy against autocracy and sabotage of the state itself: Congress, courts, streets.

"...expectations vis-à-vis the parties are asymmetrical: Democrats must be the adults in the room; the Republican party has license to feature Marjorie Taylor Greene... Accepting this...asymmetry – and...politicians never facing consequences...– is part of what has brought us to this moment."

“But has I have said before and will likely say again, the probability of a preventable catastrophe has increased by an order of magnitude.” @dandrezner.bsky.social https://danieldrezner.substack.com/p/the-dark-vibes-of-dc

Hegseth made his views of JAGs very, very clear at his "confirmation hearing." Everyone who voted for him knew this, is complicit.

"Unfähig zu einer eigenen Wirklichkeitsbeschreibung, imitiert die Union die Bedrohungsrhetorik einer Partei, vor deren Gefährlichkeit sie selbst warnt."

"Die Verankerung unserer politischen Kultur in einem globalen Gefüge wird oft übersehen. Aber man sie kaum überschätzen. Denn man wird auch die Krise der Mitte nicht begreifen, wenn man nur auf die inneren Verhältnisse schaut."

"Ordo Iuris and MCC’s successful infiltration of Trump’s policy circles via Heritage — and its use of that platform to push an anti-Brussels agenda — is newsworthy in itself, but their controversial ties to Russia make it even more so."

„Sometimes you have to reverse the the flow of shit and flood the other side“. Resistance lessons to start with.

"...standard tactics – and the kind of consultant advice that ...worked for Clinton in the 90s – have a real drawback: they communicate that...things are still pretty normal. Citizens take cues from elites. If elites act normally, why should everyone else be that concerned?" Guardian column:

Mafia State.

New, from me @theatlantic.com: *No, the federal government is not too big *It has real human capital needs *Firings are indiscriminate, weakening state capacity *Creating a toxic and politicized workplace is driving away dedicated employees www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archiv...

Elon Musk is the Mike Lindell of Trump 2.0. He’s an upgrade in terms of star power and wealth, but just as conspiracy-addled, overly online, and completely ignorant about how government or society functions.

Heritage Foundation workshop 'will focus on a new report titled “The Great Reset: Restoring Member State Sovereignty in the 21st Century,” prepared by Hungary’s Mathias Corvinus Collegium (MCC) and Poland’s Ordo Iuris...' The report advocates 'for a looser, “free cooperation of sovereign nations...'

Well, at least there's no pretending going on here. #AIEthics www.rollingstone.com/politics/pol...

This is very, very bad. Am working on a write-up, but let’s just say that firing military leaders for blatantly political reasons is wildly inappropriate; firing all the too lawyers is ominous; firing them all at the same time is a terrifying five-alarm fire

Pretty horrific to see, especially with all the fake AI images of Merz on the post, presumably created by the 'uncensored' grok AI. Now most of them are still recognizable as fake, but some are close enough that people might take them as the real.

Read this urgent op-ed by @jwmueller-pu.bsky.social in the @theguardian.com Things are no longer “pretty normal” So we need to start acting like we truly believe in, and value the pretty important things we are trying to defend

Illegally cutting cancer research and meals on wheels to pay for PR ads for themselves.

Two historical analyses of protest movements published in recent years—one lamenting their political defeats, the other celebrating cultural transformations—help us understand barriers to effective resistance today, as well as the possibilities for long-term societal change:

One of the world's most eminent political scientists has started writing a diary, trying to make sense of developments for which existing concepts and categories often do not seem to fit. Do follow.

This could have gone the other way if one general had not stood up to Pinochet.

A beautiful and moving piece in memory of Andy Rabinbach.

Welcome to affirmative action for white male mediocrity, which has a long, long history but is all ramped up and shouty and sulky right now.

TRUMP: You have a man who has let a country that had the more beautiful cities get demolished. The most beautiful domes. FOX: But that's Russia's fault, Mr President T: 1,000 year old domes. Everything is demolished. It's sorta like Gaza F: That's Putin's fault T: I get tired of listening to it

A massive, self-inflicted wound on American higher education.

So the President not only fired the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs. He also fired the top JAGs at the Army, Navy and Air Force. Those are the lead people who determine what is a legal order and what is not. So if you're planning to do things that are illegal they're the most obvious obstacle.

These are all excuses. We have had almost a decade of Republicans have their cake and eat it.... supporting Trump in public and whining in private. It is really pretty simple: if you are too afraid to do your job, find another job.

Among those Trump and Musk fired at the FAA: - Lawyers who help keep drunk or reckless pilots out of the skies - Air traffic control support staff - Employees who track potential new flying hazards like cranes - Staffers who medically clear pilots to fly www.rollingstone.com/politics/pol...

For anyone near Princeton: Talk by Robert Post on Academic Freedom, organized by Princeton's Academic Freedom initiative, 4.30 pm this Friday, 2/21.

Biden admin. supposedly did more than any other admin. "in American history" to destroy free speech in both the US and in Europe. As plenty of observers have rightly pointed out: Performative lying is part of authoritarianism.

"The US Marshals Service has deputized members of Elon Musk’s private security detail, giving them certain rights and protections of federal law enforcement agents." Old-fashioned liberals might want to remember what renders the public-private distinction important (despite all its problems)...

Francis criticizing Christian identitarianism (what Rogers Brubaker called "Christianism"): "...worrying about personal, community or national identity...easily introduces an ideological criterion that distorts social life and imposes the will of the strongest as the criterion of truth."

Now why do you think it is that DOJ dismissed charges against SpaceX WITH prejudice but Emil Bove plans to hold charges over Eric Adams' head for almost four more years? www.nytimes.com/2025/02/20/u...

I wonder where JD Vance puts these fellow Christians who fled to our country for help on the ordo amoris spectrum

“Earlier this month, he issued an extraordinary rebuke of United States Vice President JD Vance’s characterization of Ordo Amoris ... The papal pushback triggered fury from the White House, raising the prospect of a highly politicized succession battle should Francis die.”

Francis criticizing Christian identitarianism (what Rogers Brubaker called "Christianism"): "...worrying about personal, community or national identity...easily introduces an ideological criterion that distorts social life and imposes the will of the strongest as the criterion of truth."

What’s happening is a generational wound

How many federal workers would DOGE need to fire to make up for Musk not paying his fair share of taxes? Answer: 677,000. That's 44% of the entire non-DoD federal workforce. Again, this power grab is not about the budget. It’s about politics.

Post offices are critical infrastructure in rural communities. It’s hard not to see the first month of this administration as a wholesale attack on rural communities, its most loyal voting base.
