The University of Pittsburgh confirmed Friday that there would be no new Ph.D. offers of admission while Pitt works to understand how reduced federal aid could impact the institution.

Doctoral students generally get free tuition and stipends (25,00-38,000 a year depending on field and area of country). Five year packages generally. That’s why the competition to get into them is so great. MA programs are often not funded for the students but many might work while taking classes.

Any PhD program worth its salt covers your tuition. The real price is the opportunity cost — 5 years of unpaid research and a TAship that barely covers your living expenses vs. an entry level position at BCG or Citadel or whatever.
