This is a contest of social power, a moral and political struggle for the active allegiance of the people. Our power is in numbers, truth, solidarity, protest, strikes, boycotts, the ballot, and civil disobedience. With these nonviolent weapons we can and will win.

History and the study of civil resistance are clear: mass nonviolent people power wins more than violent armed movements across the world. This is not a contest of physical force — which is great because Trump controls the most destructive arsenal ever assembled.

We can’t let Trump and his allies shift the focus of popular revulsion away for the violence of ICE’s horrific mass deportation abuses onto movement violence in response.

Rather than targeting “the worst of the worst” who violently endanger others, ICE is rounding up families as they show up to court for their immigration cases, ripping hard working mothers and fathers away from their children, terrorizing whole communities.

Right now millions of Americans — including many Trump voters — are seeing and being horrified by the ugly reality of Trump’s mass deportation campaign.

Working class voters should know that the candidates chosen in our Democratic primaries are not beholden to the same billionaires and corporations that are screwing them over.

Some ugly things were said at encampments, but the central outcry to end US complicity in Israel's criminal slaughter of thousands of Palestinian civilians was noble and courageous. Regardless, shutting down everyone’s speech is never the answer to anyone's poor speech.

Campus leaders and local police must have discretion in responding to encampments to balance protecting 1st amendment rights and public safety and health. Mandating crack downs is unacceptable.
