China has done a pretty good job with that.

You think that people telling you what you are and are not allowed to read is a good thing? But I would bet that you have shouted about “free speech” in the past.

Also, just as a note to anyone else who’s thinking about Ireland, if you can prove that you or your spouse have a parent or grandparent who was born in Ireland, you have an automatic visa. Of course that doesn’t cover all the trouble and expensive getting there, but it’s certainly the first step.

Our situation is greatly complicated because we have eight cats. The rules for getting them into the European Union are complex. Just finding USDA approved vets is the first step. If we have to do it, it will be a very involved project. But we would never leave them behind.

That makes me uncomfortable, plus it is a non-English speaking country, and I am not confident in my ability to learn a new language at my age. So like you, we are thinking that if we have to do it, it will be Ireland.

We found after looking further that Ireland and Portugal are the best bets. In the last election, the right wingers went from 12% to 20% of the Portuguese Parliament.

The same was true for the UK and the northern European countries. My second choice would have been Denmark. No way - they are not looking for more citizens.

My husband and I started looking into emigration the day after the election. My first choice was Canada, but they have no visas we could qualify for. Not even for retirees who are not going to be looking for a job or asking to for national health coverage.

I would be afraid that he might order out the capital police or the National Guard to shoot people. I’m not really kidding.

Of course, then we get President Vance. An improvement? Who knows.

He is 80 years old, seriously overweight, has dementia, incontinence, mysterious medical records that he won’t release, and eats probably the most unhealthy diet I have ever seen. I don’t think we will have to wait all that long for him to leave office.

I’ve even come across the phrase “similarly, people ask” more than once. It’s really frustrating. The writing is garbage and you can’t trust any of the info.Sometimes I can’t find any hits that aren’t AI. I think the Internet is well on the way to being useless if this is not taken care of.

The AI crap that comes up on the Internet when I do Google searches on any topic these days seems to have a lot of telltale words and phrases. For example it uses the words “ similarly” and “ therefore” a lot more than you would normally see. Also, the phrase “people ask”.

Did you take this picture with a drone? Or was it taken from an upstairs window? Just curious; I’ve never seen you mention having a drone, but since you’re very into photography, it would be a cool thing to have.

2 years. If we have an election in 2026, there’s going to be a pretty big backlash.

Check out The Meidas Touch Network. Proudly and defiantly anti-fascist, but real and intelligent news, including legal details you mostly won’t see anywhere else.

Years and years ago, people in the science fiction club that I belong to were all talking about how young people don’t read anymore. My response was “Yesh sure, all those Harry Potter books are being read by people over 50.”

And also, if we ever do find a way to reverse aging, and we don’t stop population growth, then the world has enormous, enormous problems.
comment in response to

I guess you COULD defend him by saying he thinks that if he can figure out how to actually reverse aging, then eventually it will become available to everyone for a lot less than 4 million, so he is doing this to help others. But it’s truly unlikely that’s his motivation.

Not true! There’s still at least the Meidas Touch Network and plenty of good podcasts giving real news - like Keith Olberman, Legal AF, Law and Chaos, lots more.

I have been wondering if there is something about pathological lack of empathy, usually coupled with narcissism, that makes people more likely to achieve high levels of power and wealth. It makes more sense to me than assuming that becoming rich and powerful turns normal people into psychopaths.

2. An LLM program uses statistical analysis to determine which words are likely to follow other words. It is not a neural net or any other kind of attempt to create a conscious artificial mind. It does not think, does not experience consciousness and can’t want anything. Have I got this right?
comment in response to

1. Ok, I’m not a computer person, let alone an expert, but, and please correct me if I’m wrong, what we call “AI” is a computer program called a Language Learning Module.

The day after the election, I started looking into how to immigrate to Canada. Not kidding. I found out that it isn’t really possible, not even for retirees who are not looking for a job. Unless, God forbid, things get bad enough that we can apply for asylum.

I read your post before I saw the post you were responding to, and I immediately thought you were talking about President Gerald Ford. You do seem to have known just about everybody so it’s possible, but not knowing a lot about his presidency, I don’t know if anyone would describe him as a treasure.

What will happen in 2026 if Trump, and the Heritage Foundation, and the Supreme Court, just decide there won’t be an election? Who’s going to stop them? Who’s going to stop them if they decide to suspend or dissolve Congress? Or the Constitution?

You could take out every word between “person” and “ends”, and it would be a very true statement. Or is that the joke and I’m just being dumb and not getting it?

Winesaps, granny smiths, and fujis were all around before honeycrisps, and they are all delicious. In fact, I prefer fujis to honeycrisps. If all someone had available before was the dreadful red delicious, then I understand them thinking that the honeycrisp is a game changer.

Someone, somewhere has to have proposed that Bombadil was The Logos (i.e. Christ), who always existed from eternity, according to Christian doctrine. I don’t think that’s right, but I’m sure someone must’ve thought of it because of Lewis’s Christian theology permeating so much of his work.
