This may be the worst data visualization I have ever seen. Read below for some hot takes about this shit dataviz by the super transphobic @nytimes.com

I really beg datavis researchers to start engaging with this. The role of the chart here is to provide a cover of objectivity. It’s reifying the entire fucking opinion section into a 2d space to lens it some Cartesian legitimacy or something equally dark. So, so gross.

The Data + Feminism Lab is proud to support this brilliant and beautiful collaborative book! It’s available in Spanish and the title in English translates to “Feminist Security Studies from Latin America and the Caribbean’

Data can be used to give community voice, bringing people together for sense-making and storytelling. Thanks Lina Giraldo for inviting @kanarinka.bsky.social and I to share some examples from our work at Emerson earlier this month.

From @kanarinka.bsky.social in the MIT faculty newsletter: fnl.mit.edu/january-febr... I hope that all academics understand this threat for what it is. It is as existential as the federal research budget cuts, and also much deeper and more important than that.

The best time to have left Substack for literally anything else—Ghost, Medium, Beehiiv, WordPress, carrier pigeon—was when it refused to moderate Nazi publications back in 2023. The next best time is today.

The news cycle right now - even just for science & higher ed - is overwhelming. We have to do it, but fortunately, we don’t have to do it alone. My team is focused on tracking what’s happening to research funding, jobs & salaries, shared datasets, university responses & safety of our communities

Last year we started a project to download and preserve public data. lil.law.harvard.edu/blog/2025/01... Since saving public data is in the news today — but is always needed — let’s talk about what you can do to help.

A poignant and evergreen question found while cleaning under the oven.

In art and literature, "criticism" doesn't mean "pointing out flaws." It's something bigger and more interesting than a referee calling fouls. I think we should have the same ambitions for data visualization criticism!

I appreciate much of the analysis I’ve seen over the last couple days. I don’t think we can talk about what is sick in politics or media (a lot!) w/o looking directly at billionaires, refusing to shut up about billionaires, and coming for billionaires through policies that chisel away at their power
