Felling of ancient London oak tree reported to police

🚨 A new poll shows the Scottish Greens on course to win 15 MSPs, nearly doubling our 2021 result! According to Prof John Curtice this would put us ahead of Labour and level with the Tories in second place. Scotland can bring real change. We can build a fairer, greener country for everyone.

No idea if this is true or not, but there needs to be serious repercussions for whoever did this act of environmental vandalism. enfielddispatch.co.uk/toby-carvery...

"The idea that billions of people can just adapt to worsening climate impacts is a “false comfort”, he said: “There is no way to ‘adapt’ to temperatures beyond human tolerance … Whole cities built on flood plains cannot simply pick up and move uphill.”

1. Infuriatingly, here in the UK, the government still seems to believe that the only way of introducing trees is to plant them (see, for example, the current Land Use Framework consultation). News just in: trees can self-seed, which could be why they've survived for 360m years. 🧵

South Korea wildfires become biggest on record as disaster chief points to ‘harsh reality’ of climate crisis

I don't often ask people to write to their MPs. But I think they might listen to you on this, as it's so jaw-droppingly awful, and they're almost certainly unaware of it. www.theguardian.com/commentisfre... Please also write to the Environment Secretary: [email protected] Thanks.

Climate beakdown is a very real and growing threat to Scotland's farmland, communities and landscapes. We need to be making changes to reduce our emissions now - in energy production, transport, how we keep our homes warm and more - or the damage will continue to spread and the costs rise.

A gobsmacking story. Water companies let toxic waste disposers, for cash, dump their loads into sewage farms. The sewage sludge is then spread, untested, on farmland, potentially poisoning vast areas, entire ecosystems and the people (you and me) eating the food. www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

The House of Lords is an archaic, anti-democratic and farcical relic of an institution. Stop empowering political cronies and the rich. Abolish the Lords now! 🚫

Global sea ice hit ‘all-time minimum’ in February, scientists say

Half of the world’s climate-heating carbon emissions come from the fossil fuels produced by just 36 companies. Energy should be in the hands of people, not corporations. Community-owned renewable energy would cut bills and generate income for local people.

The system is fundamentally broken. Unless we can change the priority from greed and profits to sustainability and protecting our ecosystems, we are royally and totally screwed. Added to the fact the rise of the far right almost globally, it's hard to find any reason for optimism at the moment.

Yet again, if these were climate protestors, there'd have been multiple arrests, with some facing years in jail for "public nuisance". But farmers can block the road and drown out the Prime Minister and the police won't touch them. The real #TwoTierPolicing

George Monibot, "We have a Chancellor and. Prime Minister who seem to have no vision at all, except this thing called growth, GDP growth" "GDP should not be used as a measure of national welfare" #BBCQT

So now we have it. Rachel Reeves's claim that a third runway at Heathrow Airport would boost economic growth comes from a report commissioned by .... Heathrow Airport. Instead of acting in the national interest, she's channelling corporate lobbyists. www.theguardian.com/environment/...

A vote for this bill is a vote for a liveable future & I urge every single MP to join me in passing this historic piece of legislation. Those who vote against must look to their consciences & ask why they're prepared to squander this historic opportunity #CANBill www.theguardian.com/environment/...

When a government tells us, within the course of one week, that we can't have new hospitals but must have new runways, you know that it is not working on our behalf, but on behalf of economic power.

To the crowds cheering Trump's withdrawal from the Paris Agreement: Do you think you live on a different planet, which climate breakdown does not affect? Do you imagine only greens and progressives will be harmed by Earth systems collapse? Do you believe you can win an argument with physics?

1. The implicit deal behind Starmerism was this: you might not like what he stands for (or fails to stand for), but at least he knows how to win elections. If you want the Tories out, he’s your only hope. But now? It’s as if he’s going out of his way to lose in 2029. 🧵
