Beyond Neoliberalism, beyond dollar-carbon nexus, and beyond US export market dependency - latest from me and Tim @70sbachchan.bsky.social buttondown.com/polycrisisdi...

This. My last visit over there, it was full of weird misogynists and creepy advertisements. But clever contrarians just can’t help themselves.

Colonial extraction and unequal exchange have shaped two centuries of North-South inequality. A thread on the new study written with @gatonievas.bsky.social [A thread 1/8🧵]

NEW: A provision in the Senate reconciliation bill would neuter the country’s fuel efficiency standards for automakers, @robinsonmeyer.bsky.social reports. One of the federal government’s longest-running programs to manage gasoline prices and air pollution hangs in the balance.

The “Larry Fink” oped is satire, people

What's the point in seeking deals from such an obstreprerous US admin? And what can be done instead?

“While Republicans attempt to shut down America’s entire scientific research apparatus, the rest of the world moves on. The demise of the IRA would decisively surrender the global market for all types of commercialized clean energy sources (and nuclear energy) to China.” @advaitarun.bsky.social

Climate litigation could potentially put oil and gas firms on the hook for trillions of dollars in damages. As law scholar Ben Franta has explained to myself and @johnvaillant.bsky.social, the further climate law develops, the more of an existential threat it becomes to the fossil fuel industry.

What should frighten us all is that this is not common knowledge. This explicitly anti-life ideology is being successfully enacted in the US right now, and without unified pushback it will spread.

“The rest of the world should hope that the EU, of all trading powers, can stand up to Trump… Trade is one area where the EU indisputably has the legitimacy to act collectively and the size and economic resilience to resist Trump’s bullying.” on.ft.com/4dBHQ29

It’s been, what, 4 months? The rest of world’s responses have barely even started

Palestine has been failed by silence and impunity - The Lancet “Every day, on average, 35 children are killed in Gaza, amounting to a total of at least 18 000 children killed in this conflict. Pre-teen children are being admitted with gunshot wounds.“ Speak up! www.thelancet.com/journals/lan...

Sadly both the theories behind IRA have mostly failed 1. Deliverism: deliver jobs and investments to consolidate democratic voters -> win 2024 election 2. Poltiical Lock-In: deliver jobs and investments to red states & districts so that a IRA caucus inside the GOP would protect the clean economy

The fact that the IRA was a meaningful bargaining chip in a fully Republican controlled bill writing process seems to indicate it's been pretty successful, imo

via @akshatrathi.bsky.social I discovered this website about carbon removal projects that ranks them by commitments and captured carbon and in short, only 94 of 189 have actually captured anything www.cdr.fyi/leaderboards

Dani Rodrik says that ideas of AI as being inevitable and uncontrollable sound very much like the narrative recited by eg Blair about globalisation in the 1990s to whenever. www.ppfideas.com/episodes/ide...

The @iea.org (!!) saying AI is “a general purpose technology, like electricity” ugh

Love this

Each time you ask an AI chatbot a question, it sends a request to a data center and strains an increasingly scarce resource: water. A 🧵on our investigation into how the data centers that power AI are increasingly being built in highly water-stressed places: www.bloomberg.com/graphics/202...

“A review of scientific research has found that pedestrians and cyclists are 44% more likely to be killed in a collision with an SUV or light truck, compared to a passenger car. The outlook is even more dire for children, who are 82% more likely to be killed when struck by the larger vehicles.”

If you were wondering about that “realism” thing, @advaitarun.bsky.social has got you: advaitcore.substack.com/p/the-bellig...

This is exactly how a country can lose soft power, for a long long time.

I don’t think it’s breaking through yet how slashing the IRA keeps us in a mostly fossil future that costs more for everyone.

And congrats to everyone who's still frequenting the Nazi bar -- apparently you're blending right in with the preferred clientele.

👇🏽This is really wild . An actual climate change clarion call

71 days of Israeli blockade on Gaza Strip Starving 2.1m people, almost half children

@katemac.bsky.social and I have written about the new narrative: End of American Exceptionalism. www.phenomenalworld.org/analysis/apr... Beginning of the Europe Boom in its Metal Era. www.phenomenalworld.org/analysis/eur... Much needed Scepticism from @tejparikh.ft.com www.ft.com/content/6596...

“How do Gazans have XYZ…” Cause they are all engineers by training or necessity I swear

For decades, this iconic graph has provided clear observational evidence of one of the key indicators of global climate change - Arctic sea ice loss. It’s from the NSIDC "Sea Ice Index" Now, support of this crucial data is at risk. A visual lens to our changing poles (zacklabe.com/arctic-sea-i...).
