Ok. I’m going to try to make a thread of books and stories that are anti-capitalist/anti-imperialist because we need alt ideas about possible futures.

This is so horrifying & absurd

On todays disability day of mourning I mourn all of the disabled people who we’ve lost over the last five years. And the ones we’re going to continue to lose as fascism creeps into every day life more and more. Holding space for that right now.

“When we are alive, we have to fight for recognition and in death our lives are cast in stereotypes.” owl.li/GaHe309l8fC #DDoM2025

“There’s outrage when an abled child is murdered, but when it’s a disabled child, there’s excuses and silence. What’s the difference? Abled people see abled children’s ...lives as...more worthy than disabled children’s lives.”

I worry that the focus on NOAA's weather predicting value is ignoring the millions of other ways NOAA researchers enrich communities and local economies. There are no oysters without NOAA. There are no blue crabs without NOAA. NOAA trains teachers. NOAA is the lifeblood of coastal communities.

I was saying to my friend yesterday as we were processing: every femme presenting person, every abuse survivor, we all clock this behavior a mile away. Even my 9yo clocked it when I was explaining it to him. Absolutely disgusting.

I got laid off today, with the rest of 18F. 18F was an elite federal software shop. We made gov't websites work better, more efficiently for the American people. We saved taxpayers from getting screwed over by contractors. And were fired for it. We made this website to tell our story: 18f.org

Oakley, Kansas (population 2,012) was Trump+68, if you want to know how this is going.

"Research programs based on gender identity are often unscientific" What a disgrace how one of the leading scientific institutions in the county doesn't stand behind its own prior assessment of what's scientific and readily bows down to the revisionist agenda of bigots at the helm.

If there’s no flu vaccine next year, or it’s harder to get, there is a very simple technology you can put on your face to take grassroots steps against spreading more death. It even works against spreading several other illnesses that are killing and hurting huge numbers of people.

I am begging you....stop telling disabled people to go to another country. We can't. Nearly zero countries accept disabled immigrants. Not even Canada. It's expensive af to move overseas too. Stop it.

This weekend, I published an article about how the right wing bullshit machine works (in large part due to participatory dynamics that integrate the collaborative work of online audience). If anyone wants to see that BS machine in action, just check the comments: www.seattletimes.com/opinion/to-u...

A Seattle Times op-ed summarizing a few of the arguments from my UW talk this week: "To understand right-wing media's power, study improv and theater of influencers." I end with some recommendations for countering the right's bullshit machine: www.seattletimes.com/opinion/to-u...

“Today’s meeting confirmed that the US is now aligned with Russia and against Ukraine, Europe, and most of the planet. I felt physically sick watching the president yell at a brave ally…” @radiofreetom.bsky.social The US is marching to authoritarianism and THAT is why they’re attacking #NIH … 1/

I feel intermittent waves of grief for this reason. I know people will think it is trite, but I have to keep reminding myself of that exchange between Gandalf and Frodo about living in difficult times.

You're going to hear a lot of DC types going on the record to say they can't figure out why any of this is happening. It's really quite straightforward: this is happening because MAGA is a eugenics project, this is eugenics. www.marketwatch.com/story/social...

Fascists will go as far as they can to try and shape public perception and create oppressive realities by manipulating language and symbols—don’t let them.

There has been a lot of chatter today about Zelenskyy's meeting with Trump, some regarding this moment when White House correspondent Brian Glenn asked if the Ukrainian president plans to wear a suit. I want to address idea in this thread. 🧵

Please read—this is becoming serious!

Unable to go to a local Disability Day of Mourning event on March 1st, but still want to participate? Join us for a virtual vigil here:

This story is about one of the ones who walked away from Omelas.

Years ago a white editor* asked if I was biased about immigration stories because I'm an immigrant. I've been asked a version of this question dozens of times since. The driving idea is that people who embody difference introduce bias; it's the framework that maintains white supremacy in newsrooms.

Everyone opining about whether boycotts are ever useful hopefully is checking what they say against “Is this a correct statement about the Montgomery Bus Boycott?”

this is the best pov i've seen on this so far tbh, i am v much seeing this thing today as opening the door to people who otherwise might not have realized how varied activism actually is and how many opportunities there are to participate

Yes, this! Me adding "paper feel" back onto my tablet screens to make them feel like something tangible again.

Touchscreens are propaganda artifacts of Big Minimalism to seduce us into thinking that less is more. Less feeling is somehow more tasteful. "Touchscreen" is ironic because they've taken the tactility out of touching. It's meant to be touched with your eyes in a showroom, like an unused trophy.

Someone in the EFT dept said do it for the plot

REUs are incredibly important opportunities for undergrads, especially for those don’t have opportunities do this work (paid! As it should be!) at their home institutions.

I'M GOING TO JUMP UP AND DOWN UNTIL PEOPLE PAY ATTENTION TO THIS> I LISTENED TO THE ENTIRE HEARING

“The Office of Personnel Management does not have any authority whatsoever under any statute in the history of the universe to hire and fire employees at another agency,” said Judge William Alsup in granting a temporary restraining order against firings of probationary workers.

just gonna be the thousandth person to remind you all that segregationists start the open bigotry with people they feel they can target most easily but do not end there

The Iowa legislature just became the first in modern history to repeal a statutory civil rights law by removing protections for gender identity first passed in 2007. They have legalized discrimination against trans people in housing, healthcare, and employment. This is a campaign of eradication.

Measles If you were born between 1957-1968, your MMR vax was less effective than what came later & you may need boosting. If you were born before ~1984, there's a small chance it may no longer be protecting you & you may need boosting. I just messaged my doc to ask re: a "titer test" to find out.

This helps to understand what's going on with the REUs (Research Experience for Undergraduates): On Feb 13, NSF said: "Although we [had earlier] sent many of you emails expressing our plans to recommend for funding...We deeply regret that we are not going to be able to hold to all of those plans."

I believe in my heart. "Okay,” the young man challenged. “So what’s the answer?” “There isn’t one,” I told him. “No answer? You mean we’re just doomed?” He smiled as though he thought this might be a joke. “No,” I said. “I mean there’s no single answer that will solve all of our future problems."

Now is a great time to commit to daily practices that reinvigorate and nourish your body, mind and soul. Even starting with five minutes in the morning everyday or every night dedicated to your wellbeing can be life changing and life-saving.

I know using alt-text for images isn't yet habit for a lot of refugees from Xitter. I get it. But ESPECIALLY when sharing anything related to political activism, please use it. Disabled people, including blind folks or those w/ low vision, are targets right now. They must be a part of your activism.

My friend Professor Gray is right. His thread goes right alongside the bell hooks quote I shared last night: "All our silences in the face of racist assault are acts of complicity. What does our rage at injustice mean if it can be silenced, erased by individual material comfort?"

Today, in dystopia: The world's largest call center operator is using AI to make its staff sound less Indian by @benoitberthelot.bsky.social www.bloomberg.com/news/article...

Q: Why is it so much easier for the US right to organize and be unified than the US left? A: Anti-Black racism. The only consistent thing that the right agrees on, is this. It's what unifies them. But the US left is very anti-Black too! So they try to get the benefits, without helping Black folk.🤷🏿‍♂️

USAID staff have two days to clean out their offices at the agency’s former headquarters in DC. People are gathering on the sidewalk in the rain to show their support, applauding workers as they pass by.

poignant delights: @haimson.bsky.social taught my paper SURVIVORS in his class, and students can submit memes instead of/as reading responses for some assignments. i think these are my favorites (the paper is on archiving digital histories of HIV/AIDS &avail here: firstmonday.org/ojs/index.ph...)
