Once you’ve got a comprehensive account of what content is wrong, and what’s completely imaginary, the investigation process then puts it to the student - did you make this up or did someone/something else. Neither explanation ends in a glorious grade.

It’s time consuming for sure, but there’s a particular kind of plausible sounding but completely inaccurate made up content to be found once you start checking.

As a relatively long in the tooth academic, encountering AI in essays now is startlingly similar to encountering plagiarism back when I was marking handwritten essays at the start of my career, pre plagiarism checkers: that absolute “This is just off” when reading it.

I barely dare repeat it in case I find out I imagined the whole thing, but I have a memory from my student days at Cardiff of being told about one of our lecturers needing to listen to Test Match Special while writing, to the extent they had tapes for when there was no cricket on.
