Hello! I’m in Canada and have also taught many students to read and initially sounding out short words like “in” does not hold them back from quickly building fluency. And when I refer to “not really reading”, I saw kids recite words without even looking at words - definitely not reading.

And P.S. “Children should be seated so they are facing the source of the information: the teacher and the board” during lessons…despite the fact that many teachers have been misled otherwise.

Sure! We shared a quote and then showed where the gist section is on the thinkSRSD online course (with student-facing videos, etc), a colleague and I shared examples and ideas from our classrooms, and we handed out a gist lesson plan from thinkSRSD that works from K-8. Teachers are invited to try!

If they’re going to practice “unsupervised” (so to speak) I definitely recommend sheets that include the dot for where to start, arrows for which way to go, etc., so they’re not practicing and ingraining bad habits! I like the Printing Like a Pro sheets - but in K they even do those 1:1!

At first I used plain whiteboards but then realized the kids struggled with the letter placement - lots of floating “g”s, etc. This is much more effective!

I just finished listening while out doing some chores. Both of you touched on a number of things I've been thinking about too! I had a few extra listeners, while I was outside too!

The book contains a suggested scope & sequence, “A handy base element list” (that’s what one appendix is called, and I agree) to support morphology understanding/instruction and a list of memory hooks for spelling (e.g., You wouldn’t beLIEve a lie). Excellent resource!

I appreciate the author’s respect for dialect, noting for example that the second person plural in English (you) may be changed to y’all or youse.

We can thank the Irish for getting everyone to start putting spaces between words back in the 7th - 8th centuries. Lyn wants us to consider the possessive 's a suffix and part of morphology, not punctuation.

There was a low buzz of excitement after the intro, teachers got their manuals, and we will get back to it in January! I feel great about how it went!

There are appropriate levels of teacher "dominance" (not as bad as it sounds) & "cooperation" that have the largest effect on student achievement. Note that research also shows "students prefer a teacher who can control a class & provide a safe, collegial working atmosphere." 4/4

(During our phonics lessons, my students will often ask, "Mrs. Winn, am I on fire?" as they see that as my highest compliment, and I am at my most dramatic after hearing each child read their weekly take-home book to me. The look of pride on their faces is a highlight of my day.) 3/4

One of 7 communication conventions: "Learners will enjoy the material & work on it better & more diligently if they're reinforced for good performance & hard work via 'praise & challenges, exhortations, & expressed amazement over the performance of the student'" p. 121 2/4
