Enjoy these 'bad metaphors for teaching'! I really like "the student's mind is a dartboard and the teacher chucks sharp objects in its general direction to see what sticks" Thankfully a lot of HE has moved on, but still persists in many areas ... #AcademicSky mathwithbaddrawings.com/2016/01/06/u...

While I appreciate why mandatory online training is often necessary, I always find I learn more about how *not* to design online educational materials than I do about the subject matter. Some frustratingly poorly designed questions in the ones I am plugging through today .....

Applying for Senior Fellowship of AdvanceHE? Tips to ensure you meet the criteria #AcademicSky #HigherEducation

Dear #LTHEchat, #loveLD & #AcademicSky communities. Have you ever used one of the Hull SkillsGuides and would be willing to write an endorsement? I'm looking for evidence of impact, and I know these guides have been widely recognised! I'm super proud of my design & approach.

A4: I might be lurking for the answer to this one 🙊. But seriously, we need to sell the benefits of inclusion. What person working in #HigherEd wants to produce something that *isn’t* inclusive? But we also need a stick. Appraisals, promotion criteria, badging & awards for compliance. #LTHEchat

ASPB "remains committed to robustly supporting and strongly advocating for diversity and inclusion in the plant sciences, period." Read full statement 👉 https://blog.aspb.org/aspb-reaffirms-its-commitment-to-diversity-and-inclusion/.

Am *so* done with Women in STEM campaigns which centre white women (who were not paid for their time), and where any women of colour included are on precarious contracts. If you are struggling to find women of colour in STEM your campaign should say ‘we must do better and here is how’ #IDWGS2025

How you *can* create time for writing (yes you can, even if you are super busy!) Finding time for writing is challenging, but if you want to generate outputs you need to create time. Here I share some of my tips and strategies for finding more time for writing

Diverse teams ask more innovative questions, and their multiperspectivity accelerates progress. Equity in STEM isn’t optional—it’s a prerequisite for thriving knowledge.🧪 #AcademicSky www.science.org/content/arti...

"Computing averages of the categorical data called grades makes no more sense than averaging ZIP codes" (p. 20). @roberttalbert.bsky.social @dccmath.bsky.social

#BlackHistoryMonth Now more than ever, we must uplift, amplify, & celebrate Black scientists, scholars, & leaders. Beronda Montgomery @berondam.bsky.social is a plant scientist who researchers & teaches about mentoring & culture. Read "Lessons from Plants" ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ www.hup.harvard.edu/books/978067...

Students whose universities demand quicker feedback-turnaround by staff are barely (if any) more satisfied with their feedback. Who would guess it? My new paper 🙃 doi.org/10.1080/0260...

I've had such a brilliant start to my new role at @bnuni.bsky.social Have a great team to work with, and have found it to be so collegiate and refreshingly values driven thus far. Lots of work to do, but feeling really positive about the impact I can make #BNUproud

Well the award for most cowardly, boot-lickingest academic society has squarely gone to the American Society of Microbiology, who has taken down features of various non-white scientists. Absolutely pathetic behavior. Those articles are now coming up as “under review”. Truly sickening cowardice here.

Yet another example of #WomenInSTEM being overlooked, and another one I was (shamefully) unaware of. For non-biologists: restriction enzymes (REs) are *essential* for genetic engineering, and most molecular biology. No REs -> no synthetic insulin, no Covid vaccine etc etc bsky.app/profile/soms...

Why I must be braver when it comes to EDI: reflections and apologies Some difficult but important personal reflections on my own failings when it comes to EDI and social justice

Stop saying “DEI hire”. Don’t repeat it when others use it. Don’t use it mockingly against those using it. Don’t use it to refer to practices that were implemented to attempt to counteract discrimination and even out the playing field. Don’t give credibility to a euphemism. Make people be specific.

While words are no replacement for action, am v disappointed not to have seen strong statements from @royalsociety.org @royalsocbio.bsky.social @instituteofphysics.bsky.social @roysocchem.bsky.social standing up for STEM and supporting US based colleagues when science is so immediately under attack

As scientists we must stand up for evidence and values. This 2024 piece sum it up “Given the current political reality and the expansion of attacks on science, it is time for scientists to be more effective, forceful, and vociferous as their own political advocates.” www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...

This is facism in action. People will say science is apolitical, but as long as science is studied by humans, it will always be political. Deciding what gets studied and how is censorship.

Happy (and more than a little nervous) to share this piece through the Engaged Learning Collective. Thanks to my colleagues for supporting this in our writing group! (And thanks to @jenlouden.bsky.social for the container to write this!) open.substack.com/pub/engagedl...

This is an excellent piece from @liznorell.bsky.social on how academic writing can be alienating, and how frankly dull it can be! Really valuable observations re student perspective too - lets increase engagement by helping students find their authentic voices open.substack.com/pub/engagedl...

New publication alert ⬇️ journal.aldinhe.ac.uk/index.php/jl...

Katharine talked about this at this at the #PlantSciEd meeting earlier this monte and was the best advice ever! #BOGOF

Big issue here and I'm really glad @evenicholls.bsky.social mentioned it. If we won't or don't support our disabled and ND students to degree completion, we're doing it wrong and doing wrong by them too.

Just been at excellent UniversitiesUK webinar "Anti-Racist leadership from the top: University executives challenging the status quo" - v thought provoking re leadership, accountability, courage etc. Sign up for the next one! #highereducation #antiracism www.universitiesuk.ac.uk/latest/event...
