If so, it is time to start crafting some cool-ass laws. What a time to be a state legislator or an AG in a blue state. The Supreme Court just said you no longer have a boss. It's the last day of school, Democratic state majorities and AGs! Time to abuse some power.

It was not completely useless! But I'm not convinced I couldn't have gotten further in the same amt of time with the original matlab script and a lot of googling "how to [blank] in python"

he was a co-founder there! he knew who i was! he praised my work to me on slack. and they just let me go. and then they cut their whole identities team after i left. now he's sitting there going "yes yes! trans people DID stop persuading!"

i have a really hard time listening to ezra klein sit there and accept this idea that trans people stopped trying to persuade people when he was in a leadership position at the last publication that actually employed me. i wrote dozens of explainers for vox! they didn't renew my contract!

Lol yeah my first grant I ever applied for was through the FS integrated pest management program and *guess what suddenly went silent*
There's basically no other reliable source of funding for the study of invasive forest pests.

Forestry, forest eco, wildlife bio, fisheries, dendro, forest entomology, forest pathology, hydrology, soils......
All of it funded through USDA!!

it's a bunch of half-sib families we grew from seed, left in a nursery bed for 3 winters, and dug up and transplanted this spring to wider spacing

None of my cold hardy trees are fruiting for another couple years, but I'll be collecting seed from around the Midwest and hopefully Northeast this fall, happy to share extras

USDA Forest Service research budget zeroed-out
comment in response to

basically the paper books Anthropic bought & scanned themselves were fair game (I'm not saying I agree with this, that's just what the judge ruled), but the entire torrent archive of pirated books they downloaded to train their models were obtained illegally and therefore they can go down for piracy

And then they say getting rid of USFS R&D is fine because universities will pick it up… but circle back to getting rid of funds to land grant universities. 🤬

See also wildfire research and the entire US Forest Service research and development branch getting wiped out, literally.

As well as zeroing out Forest Service and decimating most other USDA science arms. There is a lot there and it will all be gone.

The house budget zeroes out Smith-Lever and Hatch funds to Land-Grant Universities. Much of those funds are built into salaries. If those cuts survive in the senate bill, things will not be pretty and any Land-Grant institution across the country.
