Word of the day is ‘huff-snuff’ (16th century): a hectoring bully or braggart.

Third graders in Steubenville, Ohio, are among the best little readers in the nation. For nearly 20 years, the elementary schools in this economically depressed area have produced better readers than some of the wealthiest places in the country. www.apmreports.org/story/2025/0...

Applications for the ninth summer school on statistical methods for linguistics and psychology close on April 1, 2025. Every year people contact me saying they missed the call, so here it is again :) vasishth.github.io/smlp2025/

Brutal takedown of reading policy in Wales and Scotland, as Northern Ireland looks to change course with its new strategy based around phonics. @kathyrastle.bsky.social makes several important (and apparently still necessary) observations about the evidence on reading. www.itv.com/news/2025-02...

NEW @nature.com article w/Abhijit Banerjee, Esther Duflo, Liz Spelke + fantastic team! ☑️Children working can use arithmetic to solve problems in their shops, but struggle with abstract math ☑️Children in school can do abstract math, but cannot apply it www.nature.com/articles/s41...

This is probably the most important book that any primary teacher or leader will read. I know that’s a big statement & I don’t make it lightly. There is nothing more important than getting every child reading fluently. This book provides a clear framework to make that happen.

This is a wonderful book that dives into every aspect of how to teach children to read well: organising instruction, building a reading curriculum and culture, leading whole-school change. It belongs in every primary school. 📚💯💥

Happy to share that Liz Schotter and I have just published a beginner-level tutorial introduction to eye-tracking-while-reading studies in Behavior Methods: link.springer.com/article/10.3...

Word of the Day is one I keep posting at the end of the year, hoping its time will come. ‘Respair’, from the 16th century, is fresh hope, and a recovery from despair. Here’s to a few drops of respair in 2025.

Oldest known alphabetic writing unearthed in Syria www.nature.com/articles/d41...

The main drivers of this success in England: 1. Phonics 2. Knowledge-rich emphases 3. Focussing on sequenced curriculums 4. Clearer behaviour guidance based on the behaviour curriculum, boundaries, consequences and support. 5. Teacher training/ ECT reform 6. Assessment clearly linked to curriculum

If a child received a treatment known to be flawed in hospital, it wouldn’t be surprising to seek redress in court. We should not accept this in education either.

Step 1 is increasing access. Step 2 is about quality and results. Step 1 is far easier (and less controversial) than Step 2.

Our Journal Club meets monthly to explore word research! Join us tomorrow (Dec 5) as we discuss "Inadequate foundational decoding skills constrain global literacy goals for pupils in low- and middle-income countries" by Michael Crawford, Neha Raheel, @mariakna.bsky.social & @kathyrastle.bsky.social.

Fascinating; new data suggest summer slide is not just forgetting of academic material; seasonal variation observed on lab cognitive measures.

Enormously important work from enormous datasets. The point about needing to use absolute measures (eg wpm) rather than effect sizes drew a hallelujah! We know how to do this - get every child reading. It’s not dramatically expensive. The challenge is to increase expertise.
