Huge thanks to @indexoncensorship.org who have been a fantastic partner for my hobby of fighting Putin's censorship these last three years.

A shocking new report by @penamerica.bsky.social reveals there were more than 10,000 instances of books being banned from US schools between 2023 and 2024. Despite lawmakers’ claims, the majority of these books feature people of colour and LGBTQ+ communities: www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025...

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. Give cats more power.

I always love @resurgencetrust.bsky.social magazine delivery day. This time I got to write about bringing back the bald eagle in the USA, and the wildlife biologist who made it happen 🦅

Today marks #AndreiAliaksandrau's 1,500th day behind bars—unjustly imprisoned for taking part in the 2020 peaceful protests in #Belarus. A journalist, human rights defender, and former Index colleague, he must be released immediately. #FreeAndrei youtu.be/bnhEKh7fwUo?...

I might be biased, but the Freedom of Expression Awards are brilliant. Nominate your champions!

And the Oscar for most ridiculous censorship goes to…

And another thing. I’m a bit fed up of it being referred to as a “small boats crisis”. This is actually about people, not boats. And it’s about a lack of safe routes. Motion to call it a “safe routes crisis”.

Denying refugees citizenship simply on the grounds that they arrived here “illegally” on small boats *when there are no legal routes* for most to use takes cynicism to new heights. If Govt thinks such performative cruelty will see off Reform, they’re wrong - it’s more likely to strengthen it

Labour trying to out-reform Reform will only ape their bigotry & cruelty not their pull for chunks of the public. This is a party too lazy or unprincipled to present a counter-narrative. But then they complained about the "inefficiency" of the Rwanda scheme not the inhumanity or illegality of it.

It was such a pleasure to interview exiled Iranian musician Gola for the @indexoncensorship.org music issue. If you haven’t listened to her music yet, you’re in for a treat.

Iranian singer #Gola, aka Golazin Ardestani, fled #Iran in 2011 to perform without fear of persecution. Now in exile, she continues to fight for freedom through music—her ultimate act of rebellion. Read her interview with Index's @katiedd.bsky.social: www.indexoncensorship.org/2025/02/gola...

I’m looking for a niche publisher who’s partnered with an overseas digital platform to license their content. Hit me up if that’s you! #journorequest

You know what I want from AI? A plug in to hide phobia-related content. The social media keyword blocks and family messages of “do not read the local news right now” are apparently not enough. Send help!

Fascinating read below - and lots of big questions yet to be answered. A related book recommendation: The Book Collectors of Daraya by Delphine Minoui.

Thanks to @indexoncensorship.org for giving free access to my interview with Kyaw Min Swe who bravely faced torture and imprisonment at the hands of Myanmar's military junta. Thanks too to MiCT for the introduction and your work with journalists in exile www.indexoncensorship.org/2025/01/edit...

My fringe and I are getting ready to mourn the end of Claudia Winkleman season #thetraitors #strictly

Ahead of #Trump’s inauguration next week, Raina Lipsitz highlights why state and local governments must act to push tech companies to better protect women’s private data. Read more in Index: https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/full/10.1177/03064220241306638

My goodness, thank you for all your amazing pitches. Rest assured I will reply to everyone within the next couple of weeks, it's just taking this part-time worker a hot minute to get through all your ideas.

If we've learnt anything from Orwell, it's the importance of the relationship between free speech and objective truth. For those at the back, freedom of speech does not mean the right to say 2+2=5.

It was a pleasure not only to speak to the Museum of Colour, but also to be in the same podcast space as Gurpreet Kaur Bhatti, talking about the very topic that got me reading @indexoncensorship.org in the first place - the cancellation of Behzti.

Same

Just got the nicest rejection from @welkinprize.bsky.social. Nice rejections are almost as welcome as wins.

Oooh look what just came though the letterbox. This might be my favourite @indexoncensorship.org cover yet 👀

Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow! and Baby, It’s Cold Outside are really at opposite ends of the acceptability spectrum of weather-based flirting.

What a woman.

I cannot tell you how much fun I had doing the #BannedBooksQuiz. This is my kinda Christmas party. If you fancy winning a subscription to @indexoncensorship.org, walk this way… www.indexoncensorship.org/holidayquiz24/
