Red and blue states alike recognize the need for journalist-source confidentiality. Let's hope Idaho's shield bill gets across the finish line.

Voting opens for AEJMC Teaching Committee! As a WSU professor with award-winning teaching, Hollywood Reporter-featured courses, and LIFT fellowship experience, I want to advance AEJMC's teaching mission and pay forward the support I received. Your vote would be appreciated!

This was our "hypothetical" in my Media Law class on Wednesday... Glad to see the Associated Press standing up for itself and the American people.

It is fascism. Calling it "an aggressive flexing of power" fluffs the Führer. Call this what it is, Baker. It is fascism. #BrokenTimes Trump 2.0 Heralds an Aggressive Flexing of Power www.nytimes.com/2025/02/10/u...

One of Donald Trump’s biggest donors is looking to the Supreme Court to limit tough press coverage of the MAGA leader’s administration.

So many journalists, librarians, and organizations are working with courage and conviction under this authoritarian state. Consider recognizing one with this award.

Now is a time we need to support each other in academia across disciplines, across universities: Those in fields not under attack, need to help those who are under attack Senior faculty need to support junior faculty Privileged faculty need to support marginalized faculty #academicsky

NEW: US government websites are disappearing in real time, including sites for the US Agency for International Development, foreign assistance, neglected diseases, and children in adversity. We analyzed more than 1000 .gov websites to track what's been taken down—and what's next. wrd.cm/4aFMs5A

The USA has had two major plane crashes in the last 4 days. The USA had previously not suffered a major plane crash for 16 years. ‘DEI’ programs have existed for decades. So what was it that changed in the last 14 days or so to suddenly cause so many crashes?

The worst thing about press/tv/media knuckling under like beaten dogs is that there is a massive potential market for content that tells Trump or Musk to go fuck themselves. You want clicks? Engagement? Views? Step the fuck up, put on your big boy pants, and do your fucking job. You will make $.

Last year we started a project to download and preserve public data. lil.law.harvard.edu/blog/2025/01... Since saving public data is in the news today — but is always needed — let’s talk about what you can do to help.

The book I am working on now historicizes this pattern that has been decades in the making — showing how monopoly power and commercial imperatives overwhelm public interest protections time and again.

ABC’s $15MM payoff to Trump was bad enough, but at least in that case there was an error (a minor one) at the heart of the suit. If CBS settles this bullshit case, it’s a catastrophe for the network - and the news business. Gift link: www.nytimes.com/2025/01/30/b...

Meta is renewing its threats against employees, telling them today that they will hunt for leakers and tolerate zero leaks. Want to know how that is going? Three Meta employees who I’ve never spoken to before just cold messaged/emailed me offering me to be sources.

As information out of the US government is increasingly corrupted by Trump and his cronies—facts removed, accounts distorted, lies promoted, etc.—it’s increasingly important for people/orgs outside govt to record and preserve factually accurate information. The war on truth is accelerating.

M. Aubrey Studebaker, you produce such brilliant research! It has been a privilege to have been able to read your work over the past few years. Now, seeing your manuscripts in print, such a testament to you as a person and scholar. And congrats to Amy as well!

The 1st 4 days: 👏States sue Trump over birthright citizenship 👏California refuses to allow immigration enforcement in schools 👏Danish politicians literally tell Trump to “f**k off” And tonight: 👏Mexico refuses to allow deportation flight to land Trump is a weak bully. Resistance is everything.

Stories of this happening to people should be on the front page of every paper, constantly on every chronic, etc. This isn't what even most Trump voters intended to vote for, and when that becomes clear to Trump, he usually backs down.

New at SCOTUS: the steady chipping away at the church-state wall could culminate in its dismantlement in this case asking whether states can directly fund religious education

BREAKING: SCOTUS takes up two new matters, including a huge case over whether explicitly religious schools can be excluded from a state’s charter school program. In this case, the Oklahoma Charter School Board wants to fund the school, and OK AG Drummond, a Republican, is fighting the Board.

Friends, please share this opportunity with your contacts in broadcast news. This is an excellent opportunity to work in new facilities among fantastic colleagues/supervisors in UK's JAM School and wider College of Communication and Information. Lexington is a wonderful place to live.
