Hemingway, evergreen

On the Left(s), we constantly have to beg and borrow. You spend countless hours to raise a fraction of what rightwing organizers raise in a quarter of the time. It really hinders what can be done. Hardly anyone wants to have honest conversations about money and organizing.

Ok, I'm doing a version of this thread for šŸ§Ŗ who are new to political conditions where info security is a safety issue: 1. Don't make public lists of people who are engaging in acts of resistance 2. Be weary of calls to advertise acts of subversion 3. Don't live post resistance meetings

Last night, we broke the news that the top US election security watchdog has frozen all of its election security work and is reviewing everything it has done to help state and local officials secure their elections for the past eight years. https://wrd.cm/3QkfGh3

šŸ§µ"So this is how liberty dies..." Trumpā€™s first 3 weeks have been a relentless flood of actions. It's incredibly hard to keep up. Iā€™ve gone through 69 actions & mapped out the pattern - showing how they fall within 5 broad domains consistent with authoritarian states 1/9

AI is taking a toll on society that its wealthy creators donā€™t bear

On January 24, Trump's DOJ said it won't enforce the FACE Act except under ā€œextraordinary circumstances.ā€ Within hours, the FBI called an abortion provider in North Carolina and said it wouldn't continue investigating the bomb threat the clinic received in July. My latest:

This is not just a "pause." It is an unlawful destruction now. Foreign aid is a cornerstone of national security with diplomacy and defense. USAID's work reaches 100s of millions worldwide and America will be harmed. Here are some of the lives at stake.

Have a timeline cleanse. This is Flurry. She's a Samoyed-Golden Retriever mix, and she's 15 years old (although she still thinks she's 15 months old!). She loves rolling in the snow and getting the zoomies whenever there are, well, flurries.

An analysis by the Voting Rights Lab found that young voters are 3.4 times more likely than those over 65 to have their ballots questioned by NC Supreme Court candidate Judge Jefferson Griffin. In urban counties like Durham, the disparities are starker.

Here's a great list of things individual people can do that go beyond just voting

Lead up to the Voting Rights Act: 60 years ago this week, 105 Black teachers in Selma, Alabama marched to the county courthouse in an unsuccessful effort to register to vote. At the courthouse, they were told the registration office was closed & twice prevented from entering by sheriffā€™s deputies.

As someone who increasingly relies on the blogblog for local newsā€¦ I endorse this idea. Looking to do something useful but not sure what? Write clearly? Donā€™t mind attending the occasional public meeting? Blogblog may be for you. civicfutures.substack.com/p/in-the-loop

i truly believe that like 70% of organizing is being the person willing to send out the scheduling email and bring doughnuts to the meeting

People are hungry to do something that isn't doomscrolling or texting money to dems, they just need an invite, a plug, an on-ramp. It needn't be (and won't be) an epic battle. It'll be a grind-- meetings. But you'll have more power in that room than you did separately, and you'll feel better too.

i am the chair of the local water and sewage board and i highly recommend that everyone look into joining a local board. iā€™ve been on mine for three years and became chair last july.

Lovely day here in Chapel Hill what with the snow-covered pines and magnolias and such. Seems like a perfect time to remind you that a bunch of us are trying to get the university to stop burning coal in their downtown power plant and certainly not switch to plastic and wood scraps because c'mon

ā€œSpend some time reading a PDFā€ is a superpower with local government. For every 100,000 people in a city thereā€™s maybe 2-3 at most who will do this.

Something that is really going to be more necessary than ever is embracing uncertainty and it's actually the most difficult thing for human beings to do. It really is. But everyone needs to practice. YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT WILL HAPPEN. That means there's a possibility your actions can make a difference

Jefferson Griffin is asking the court to do something experts say no court has done before: throw out thousands of votes not because voters did anything wrong, but because a candidate believes a state agency did. www.theassemblync.com/politics/ele...

This is the sort of graffiti I look for to document. I found this underneath a pedestrian bridge along the Bolin Creek Greenway in Chapel Hill NC. In addition to graffiti like this, I am interested in documenting more direct political & hate speech in graffiti and ephemera. Photo Ā©DKThompson.

NC voter, Spring Dawson-McClure, discovered she was one of the voters who could be disenfranchised by Jefferson Griffin's lawsuit challenging the NC Supreme Court election he lost. This suit could be a dangerous blueprint to steal elections in other states. www.wral.com/news/local/v...

An underreported facet of Jefferson Griffin's shocking attempt to undermine the NC Supreme Court election is that he doesn't want military and overseas absentee votes to be countedā€”though he himself voted that way in previous elections. So, both shocking and hypocritical. Via @propublica.org. #ncpol

I havenā€™t done this yet but Iā€™m thinking about it. Grateful to Dan for the model.
