Literal tears in my eyes.

#akleg The University of Alaska Board of Regents, like many boards and commissions in Alaska, is now entirely peopled with Dunleavy appointees. The BoR's embarrassing and discriminatory actions yesterday were an outgrowth of a rotten executive branch and the slimes and slugs they've raised up.

As promised, here are the slides I shared with students to convince them to NOT use chatGPT and other artificial stupidity. TL;DR? AI is evil, unsustainable and stupid, and I'd much rather they use their own brains, make their own mistakes, and actually learn something. 🪄

To send a message to the Board of Regents, email [email protected]. To speak with Board of Regents staff, call 907-450-8010.

Gift link. A small unelected, secretive crew now has free access to sensitive private data of everyone. And Musk is already publicly targeting family members of judges who rule against the administration. If this isn’t ringing alarm bells, I don’t know what would. www.nytimes.com/2025/02/21/o...

Yeah, this is the one

I was so angry and disappointed to read this news this morning. Good for the student regent for standing up against this. I wish others had her courage.

WaPo Page One: “If you’re going to just yell at me, that’s not going to be an effective town hall,” McCormick said .. “But we’re pissed!” a woman shouted. #GA07 www.washingtonpost.com/politics/202...

Just a reminder that fascists, authoritarians, dictators of all stripes destroy archives— books, museums, databases, &c— because those things provide windows onto a plurality of other ways we might organize the world. And so preserving, defending, and spreading that knowledge harms those regimes.

I must've been living under a rock because I just read @naomikritzer.bsky.social's The Year Without Sunshine in @uncannymagazine.bsky.social and this one will stay with me for a long time. It's a phenomenal story, well told, and so needed in these tough times. Let's take care of each other!

The Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights has threatened to annihilate 60 years of advancements in equal opportunity by eliminating all federal funding for schools that support and celebrate students from diverse backgrounds. 🧵 1/

Trump’s administration intends to shut down the website offering free Covid tests by midnight tonight. Please order your tests and share this post so everyone has a chance to order theirs. Thank you in advance. 💗 covidtests.gov

Saw this in the office break room of NOAA NCEI today. I’m going to take this “feel good” energy from an anonymous person and forward it to all of you, especially those that work for or alongside NOAA. I’m proud of the work we do, and I’m grateful for all NOAA does. Thank you.

Thank you Star Trek #LowerDecks for bringing some needed laughter to my day. My son and I have been watching a few episodes each night, and it's such a nice break from the relentless awfulness of right now.

On a positive note, I finished The Teller of Small Fortunes by @julieleong.bsky.social over the weekend, and it was just what I needed in these trying times - low stakes, found family, fortune telling, and people caring for one another. The audiobook narrator is excellent, too.

Another morning, another round of emails to the Alaska congressional delegation. This time about the "Dear Colleague" letter that was released by the Office of Civil Rights on Friday, which could have devastating impacts on the Univ. of Alaska. www.ed.gov/media/docume...

I turned 50 this week, and as a small act of joy and celebration, I made this playlist for myself of significant (to me) songs from each year I have been alive. May it bring some small joy to you, too. open.spotify.com/playlist/4ge...

I found this morning's Chop Wood Carry Water by Jessica Craven to have the resilient, heartening news about resistance that I needed today. People are fighting. substack.com/home/post/p-...

Alaskans, consider speaking up for UA programs that support Alaska Native students. Univ. of AK Board of Regents will be hearing public testimony (2 min/person) on Tues. Feb. 18th from 4-5pm. www.insidehighered.com/news/diversi...

The headline doesn't do the article justice. Trump's admin is arguing that anything like Black Student Associations, Black History Month events, programs to retain minorities, etc are illegal and worthy of defunding the school. www.insidehighered.com/news/diversi...

Happy Elizabeth Peratrovich Day! Ḵaax̱gal.aat (1911–1958), who was Raven of the Tlingit Lukaax.ádi clan, gave a moving speech that is believed to be a large reason the first civil rights bill for Alaska Natives was passed in 1945. Read more about her here: archives.alaska.gov/education/pe...

Honoring Elizabeth Peratrovich, Tlingit civil rights activist, today and her powerful words: "Asking you to give me equal rights implies that they are yours to give. Instead, I must demand that you stop trying to deny me the rights all people deserve."

Happy Elizabeth Peratrovich Day! Loving to see posts honoring her work all over the feed! :)

One of the early civil rights pioneers. This is what she has to say to the Alaska Legislature in 1941 when they defeated an anti discrimination bill. She shamed them and it passed. Todays politicians have no shame. Nevertheless we persist.

I maxed out my credit card, emptied my savings account, and took out a loan to move from Alabama to Bethesda, MD. I don’t even qualify for unemployment since I’ve only worked at NIH for a month. I will be financially and medically devastated. Seeking suggestions for anywhere that’s hiring!!

Did you know the most powerful force for climate action is LOVE—for our children, their future, and the world they’ll inherit? That's right! Research shows this message moves hearts 12x more than jobs and 2x more than extreme weather. Source: potentialenergycoalition.org/guides-and-r...

i am going to put a finer point on this: executive orders are not laws. and they certainly are not royal decrees. they are interpretations of existing law for the purposes of enforcement. the fact that so many people are treating them as laws is actually driving me a bit insane.

The big takeaway here is that Reuters won this case against the AI company on grounds they violated fair use—the judge found the AI company was guilty because, in using copyrighted works to generate its output, it “meant to compete... by developing a market substitute.” Huge.
