I have more aspirations than accomplishments and more anxiety than action; I am a lover of tea and good stories and the silence of wild places, of sun on my face, gravel under my bike, and boulders beneath my hands.

Everyone should be aware of the line that has been crossed in the Trump trans military EO. No longer is this about "evidence," "science" or "protecting kids." Now, explicitly, black and white, it's about trans people being "liars," "dishonorable," "false." It's a big step towards very bad things.

Unexpected bit of political commentary from Liberty Mutual on my way to get groceries:

This makes me very happy 😊

Sometimes when I microwave things I hum in harmony to the note the microwave makes.

I wrote about South Korea's heroic coup resistance, which is basically a recap of all the incredible BlueSky reporting from today, and how I wish I were in the position to hoist my own representative's ass over a military baricade: www.laura-bassett.com/p/south-kore...

It’s really awesome to see these kind of recommendations with the thorough scientific review that was used to create them!

It's time once again for my annual #treebybike post. This is the December 19, 1942 cover of The New Yorker, so one full year after the attack on Pearl Harbor. This would be the first real Christmas alone, or without a family member, for millions. Gas and tire rationing had begun that year. #bikesky

I found this to be an interesting explanation of something I had basically no previous knowledge about.

I love this so much.

When quotes are posted within images, can screen readers make sense of them, or should there still be alt text including the words? Also, is there a way to add alt text to an image when reposting it from someone else?

This needs to be said, loud, and often.

This is just good advice in general!

I've been thinking about this poem by Langston Hughes recently and although it was published in 1931, it remains relevant as ever. #books #reading #booksky #poetry

Looks like a chance to be like the people I always wanted to be when learning history as a child - those who helped and hid Jews in Nazi Germany or enslaved people on the Underground Railroad. Kind of terrifying though tbh…

Many of us are echoing @timothysnyder.bsky.social's lesson in On Tyranny, "Do not obey in advance.” A no less vital admonition that deserves attn: STAND OUT “...without that unease, there is no freedom. The moment you set an example, the spell of the status quo is broken, and others will follow."

On my own I opt for the bike, but the lack of safe infrastructure makes it difficult to avoid the car with my three kids. Just getting to the grocery store a mile away involves biking along multiple high-speed, high-traffic roads with unprotected bike lanes and narrow crumbling sidewalks 😠😢

This thread is really valuable - it links out to some research and resources about disinformation and is an important reminder not to believe/repost blindly. It’s tempting not to verify information when it comes from a familiar source.
