From Air Force brat to Flint girl to Florida woman, I've learned a lot along the way. As a visually impaired person, I see things my own way. Aspiring screenwriter.

Yes, thanks, this seems like the best way to look at it. Focus on the work/objectives and let luck take care of itself.

Makes me wonder - what if, despite all the hard work, the strike succeeded by sheer luck. Doing research for a screenplay I'm writing, I thought how different American life - and my own life - would have been if the governor had given the order for the National Guard to shoot the strikers.

Your article brought to mind my hometown's (Flint's) history of unionists murdered by the billionaire-directed Black Legion in the years before the sit-down strike. TIL that Amazon flooded picketers with frigid water. Working people, please wake up before freezing water turns to bullets - again.

What fun! Thanks

I don't get the meme, and I know you'll think I'm crazy, but cyber trucks look like AMC Gremlins or Pacers to me. Bodies constructed from ugly flat panels cobbled together at haphazard angles make sense for low-end models, but what's up with these obscenely expensive Teslas?

If you haven't already, check out @rachelbitecofer.bsky.social Her book "Hit 'Em Where it Hurts" covers this topic quite nicely (or not so nicely).

Synonyms for "work with:" aid, abet, back, collaborate, expediate, facilitate, further, reinforce, support, sustain ... All I have is one small voice, but I will use it to strongly oppose doing all of these things.

Yes! "Not going back" could mean as much as making giant strides forward or as little as leaning forward - feet planted firmly on the ground - into a raging storm. Ever the optimist (not to mention disabled woman who literally can't afford to go back) I'm eager for opposition leaders to emerge.

Here's a good primer on DOE services: www.edweek.org/policy-polit... On a personal note, as a visually impaired person, I got by in HS (class of 75) via good memory, listening skills & a limited ability to read print. If ed plans for disabled students existed then, I could've done so much more.

So true! My brother was heartbroken when he found out about our parents' political transformation. They made us the people that we are. I mean - what the hell ??!! (This is a sad story too often repeated, I know, but just as sad every time.

So glad to hear it! Let me know if I can help in any way.

Maybe Rs are a lost cause at present. But non-MAGAs might be receptive to information and to the civics basics that so many lack. If more of us possessed a conceptual understanding of, say, checks and balances and the Bill of Rights, it might turn the tide. It's worth a try.

Looks like your fur baby is on sentry duty - guarding against oil drilling and condo development in our national parks under the current corrupt regime. Good dog!

I was raised on AF bases. My mid-western parents had wholesome working-class values (solidarity!). Dad used to read Mother Jones. Then, started watching Fox in the 90s. Then, was swayed by MAGAs in Air Force buddy Facebook groups. Point is, I doubt we can rely on the military to be sane.

Because pointless consumerism run amok is tons of fun once you get the hang of it. The knuckle hair is cool, but it's not gross enough. Add toenail fungus and these babies are the next Big Thing.

I listen to the Daily Beans podcast most days. Also, I regularly read Mother Jones and The New Republic. David Cay Johnston's DC Reports and ProPublica are excellent in-depth news sources. No paywalls for any of these and no sane washing!

Very cool post. This inspires me to make music again. It's been too long!

Interesting, for sure. I'll go first and confess my bias. While the poster uses the word "expedite," I believe he means "circumvent" or even "waive" the environmental permitting process - and I am not for that.

In '71, my dad retired from the Air Force. He got a good job, but wages no longer kept pace with production as they had during the post-war years. Those who worked in industry during the 20 years my dad was in the service - our neighbors in Flint - are, to this day, much better off than my family.

I don't understand what Joe and Mika think their appeasement strategy will accomplish. It seems to me that once you're on the enemies list you have two options: run for the hills or turn up the volume on your defiance to full blast. Anything in between is ineffective and demeaning.

Jeez, Louise! With progressives like this, who needs reactionary robber barons? On second thought, who needs 'em anyway?

Same. Some of my earliest memories, from my primary school days in the 60s - are asking my dad to help me understand things Chet and David were talking about on NBC news. Will we end up listening to the BBC (or something) on the shortwave radio band like people did in the Soviet era?

As a former journalism prof, what do you think is the future of news reporting? It does appear that the news sources we used to rely on for actual news are collapsing. There will always be overseas news sources and some non-profits. Will those be enough? Would love to hear your thoughts on this.

Thank you for the audio. My guess is Trump likes the parts of the revolutionary manifesto where he's a god-king and gets to shoot protesters (and has little awareness of the rest). Much here would make him unpopular with his fans. Wishful thinking I know, but maybe he will disappoint his ministers.

Happy Thanksgiving back at ya from the west side of Tampa Bay. It's a great day to be grateful for the miracle of basic arithmetic (which demonstrates that all the small things each of us does to resist hate and ignorance add up to A LOT!)

My grandparents (all 4 were financially disadvantaged) often repeated 2 gripes about crude people: "soap and water are cheap" and "they can't tell shit from Shinola." In an upside-down world, where uncouthness and ignorance are ascendant, dignity and studiousness must be dismissed as "elite."

Congratulations! I started college at 16 and graduated at 37. (I got my masters two decades later.) I think that mature learners have the most profound learning experiences.

So happy to hear about your mom! I am a visually-impaired person who comes from a working-class family with no connections. I know how to make do with less. In these uncertain times, I'm grateful to know from experience that I can dig deep to muster a glimmer of hope no matter what.

My dad was stationed at an AF Base in PR in the late 60s. There we adopted a stray puppy - our beloved Clyde - who looked a lot like your new family member. We always wanted a Bonnie to keep Clyde company, but it never happened. Would love it if you considered Bonnie, even for a moment.
