I think Canada is great. Would not want to move. But what makes Canada the best in the world? Is it the way we treat our poor? Access to education for all? Lowest in hate crimes? #1 in medical care, pharma, dental? Greatest access to mental health treatment? Fewest houseless citizens? Food access?

On the left the effective buoyancy is not large enough to separate the chain, but as the chamber is tilted, the force balance shifts in favour of the effective buoyancy and eventually the chain snaps (right).

When one droplet is immobilized as shown then by tilting the chamber the effect of buoyancy increases. At some point buoyancy becomes significant enough and the chain snaps at the bond between the immobilized particle and its nearest neighbour.

Measuring the absolute strength of this depletion interaction is typically difficult. However, these droplets float to the underside of a glass slide which makes up a chamber. If a collection of droplets is manipulated to form a chain as shown in the schematic, then the problem becomes simple.

Just as one measures the friction of an object in a first-year physics lab by tilting a table, slowly tilting the chamber yields the strength of adhesion through a simple force-balance experiment.

We have a collection of small, microscopic oil droplets that are stabilized with a surfactant in an aqueous solution. The droplets are buoyant in the solution. Furthermore, when surfactant is added in excess, micelles form which act as a depletant and provide a tuneable adhesive interaction.

Evidence that I am a physicist: obsessed with silly putty, sand dunes, cracks, patterns, flow of liquids, hair floating on a water surface, meandering of a river, oil drops floating on water while when washing dishes, a thin stream of water....I can go on!
