True - and yet the comparisons fail. Hitler did serve his adopted country through out The first World War. By all accounts he spoke well. Finally when he lead a coup he lead it from the front. Let us hope that Trump for all the horrible things he could do does not become the same Monster.

Also a nation like Guyana could possible do with the foreign income. Finally what of the families of those who died who might like to go to the place and pay homage to their memories. Surely it is the actions of the visitors that are questionable not the place.

Why not? History that is forgotten if often repeated, and for some people History is a presence. Being there brings it home, I've yet to see anyone complaining about the Jack the
Ripper walks in London. Or of the guided tours of the Civil War Battle Fields in the US.

If only that were true, but even in my own country I have met intelligent people who consider themselves Trump supporters. It is just something I cannot get my head around.

I hate to draw comparisons - because they are generally worthless, but your comment put me in mind of another world leader. Who was a convicted felon before he became leader, and though not a convicted rapist his adult niece did commit suicide while living in his house.

I miss the Ministry of Works - they always seemed to know what they were doing.

And no doubt this will be followed by another year of Luxon and her saying its all the previous Government's fault.

Didn't the economist Mark Blyth argue this back in 2013 in his book "Austerity: The History of a Dangerous Idea". Not that I would have expected anyone on the crown benches to have read it or anything like it.

I agree that the corporations have had a free ride in opening up alcohol consumption but escape the consequences of their actions. You and I were lucky to grow up in a time when there were tight restrictions on advertising of and access to alcohol.

However if you compare it to other banned drugs then I would rate it with the other category C substances. In its effects on the human body it is worse than some, better than others. But like any drug it should he treated with caution and respect.

And I agree that it is the most harmful psychoactive drug in our society because it is legal and in this modern age easily obtainable and often in a form (RTDs) that is very easy for young people to consume. But it can be argued that any substance that alters the mind should be considered toxic.

You should try and see the silver lining - while he's Speaker he can't be put in charge of rebuilding anything should another earthquake hit.

Not sure if I would agree with the last statement. There are some nasty things about. But you are right we have to have these conversations with our children and we should also show by our own actions the best way. Not drunken, tobacco smoking dad telling son that Pot will fry his brain.

Saw movie "Zeppelin" back in the early 70's - this huge behemoth floating majestically towards you, thousands of feet in the air, dropping death and destruction before you. Absolute and terrifying! Except for one small design flaw - cigar any one?

I am no expert, but if it is Odysseus - could the man with his hands tied be Dolon the Trojan spy Odysseus and Diomedes capture - interrogate - and later kill. But if it's Dolon, where is Diomedes?

Say both the North and South Islands were joined and you costed out a highway between Wellington and Picton - based on current costs - it would be close to if not exceed the four and half billion of the ferries. And extra benefit as a road of high priority the Govt would fund it no questions asked.

.... "Getting married tomorrow morning excellent - should have time to give the guns a good clean before the wedding night".
"Been to your Dad's funeral - good lad - go clean the guns".

Your problem, of course, is not employing a Gunner (s). When I was a young Gunner, and my Sgt's couldn't find any other work for me to do it was "Gnr K**** go clean the guns". On any occasion when you had a bit of spare time it was "Go clean the guns".

Of course you know what Luxon's response will "it's because of the terrible mismanagement of the last Government". I'm sure it will a line he'll still be using in the next election.

In the early days of Submarines they used white mice instead. The sad idea being that the mice might succumb dangerous petrol fumes or chlorine gas before their human crew mates and thus warning the latter to get out. I think they have an electronic device for this now.

This was a book I was told about at school, a good twenty years before I finally tracked down a copy. In my defense my teacher could not at the time remember either the title or author. When I did read it I was surprise by how short and succinct it was.

John you must be a very handy guy to know, I'm not a seismologist myself, but I do live about 20 metres from a major fault line. I did think some years ago that it might be safer to move to Christchurch! Then on 2011 ...
I will look forward to your posts on earthquakes and gardening.

Our old ginger Spike, sadly now passed, was a talker from kittenhood. Spike would come along and chat with you, I know a lot of cat owners are not keen on this and I can understand why, but I enjoyed those conversations. I miss them.
