Repeating the standard message: if you were born before 1989, there's a good chance you didn't get both doses of MMR vaccine as a child, and there are people who lose immunity over time. If your insurance will pay for a titer test to check immunity, get one done. If not, get a booster.

this makes sense, but i do want to quibble over “first.” the groundwork for this all-out assault on science, research, and universities has been laid for *years* by deriding and defunding the humanities and pretending that science, in contrast, would be safe.

Which is definitely an issue, because then Greg Abbotts of the world can act like those things don’t matter or mean anything on their way to dismantling any part of higher ed that serves the common good.

I don’t think that shared governance or academic freedom are self-referential, though I can see how they might kind of gel into jargon terms that don’t explain much to outsiders.

Not sure I think your game is fair, but the faculty in a given discipline are the experts best qualified to assess the research and credentials of other faculty in that discipline (because they are trained and credentialed in that discipline themselves).

University presidents should be shouting about how Trump is shutting down the research that benefits *all* Americans, whether Alzheimer's, cancer, heart disease, better road materials, safer cars, more efficient air conditioning, etc etc.
