That conversation of what is or isn't okay — in terms of gore and violence in horror — is political. The line between ""right"" and ""wrong"" shifts and blurs with political tides. Is the director enthusiastically testing the limits of that line /not/ a conversation with and about the line?

The franchise fuels itself on shock (which is fine!), and clearly uses its controversy and media pearl-clutching to promote itself. And there's a tradition of this in horror, I mean, Terrifier 3 screenings made me so envious of early Exorcist theater audiences. But that adds a political context.
