They were all very good refs. Borrett was the first ref to send off a Newcastle player in the Premier League when he sent Pavel Srnicek off for denying a goalscoring opportunity leading to a penalty. It wouldn't be a red card today due to it being a legitimate attempt to play the ball.

A very good ref in his day.

The Umbro kit he's wearing was my first referees kit when I started reffing.

Correct!

Nothing baffling at all about it - the Assistant Referee ruled the ball went out of play and the VAR could neither conclusively prove the AR was correct or incorrect, so could not intervene.

Yes, it is Roger Dilkes, it was only his second season on the League. He was a League ref from 1983 until 1997, refereeing on the Premier League from 1992 until 1997. It was a disgrace that he never reffed a major Final - he was a brilliant ref

Another clue about the ref you thought was Rodger Gifford - he is one of the 3 refs who I strongly believe should have refereed tge FA Cup Final, I've said it quite a few times on here and on the other place that Elon Musk has turned into a poisonous cesspit of abuse & disinformation.
comment in response to post
Correct about Martin Bodenham, wrong about Rodger Gifford. Here is the two teams for that one - Newcastle V Norwich.

Yes, it is, Jim Borrett, from today's Big Match Revisited.

The players welfare has to be taken into consideration.I strongly disagree with the amount of games in England over the Christmas/New Yr period.Id scrap the New Yrs Day match,to give the players a small break and also the lack of public transport making it hard for supporters to get to the match.

I think the top players do play too many games, but it's international games that should be reduced, I'd start by scrapping the new Club World Cup.

I think you'll still end in the top 4 but might not end Runners up. I think it's a big opportunity for the chasing pack though. Your lack of a centre forward could prove to be a problem. NUFCs owners are wanting success but they won't put themselves at risk of breaking the rules.

I'm surprised the Clubs aren't kicking up an almighty stink up with the Premier League over the drop in standards since Keith Hackett left the PGMOL and old mother Riley took over as PGMOL boss.

It is good the polite banter on here, not like the poisonous cesspit of X.If we get into the Champions League again,I'm100%certain Isak will stay,I'm still confident he'll stay if we don't as well, though.Havertz getting injured is bad for you though,I now think it is a possibility getting above you.
comment in response to post
Very true. The referees themselves were far better than this group, I think Keith or Phil would have sacked the worst ones who didnt respond. I can't see the likes of Hooper & Moss surviving with their levels of fitness and performance in their eras.
comment in response to post
You won't be getting him!

I'm hoping my lot catch yous up after putting yous out of the Carabao Cup!

Yup, it was a rather dodgy penalty he gave Man U, which helped Man U to end the unbeaten run. I remember one season in about 5 consecutive Premier League Newcastle matches he sent off a Newcastle player in every match and 2 of them were rescinded by the FA because they were blatantly wrong.
comment in response to post
That last comment saying he thought that was a compliment says it all about him!
comment in response to post
Is he not mixing him up with Martin Atkinson? Was Atkinson also a police officer before becoming a full-time referee?
comment in response to post
I totally agree with Eamon. Riley could only control games by overuse of his yellow & red cards, he appeared to have little rapport with the players and no sense of humour. He was a robot and an awful one at that!
comment in response to post
It could be worse - it could be Hooper the ref, with Atwell as the VAR!
comment in response to post
The thing I want to see happen is Newcastle United winning a trophy!
comment in response to post
Now Mike Riley has a senior position in Northern Ireland. He's probably turning Northern Ireland referees into a shambolic mess as well. He was a crap referee in his day as well!

Brazil, Yugoslavia & Scotland all beat Zaire and drew with each other ending level on 4 pts (won 1 drew 2 out of 3 matches). Scotland missed out on qualifying for the 2nd round on goal difference.

Strangely the Big Match Revisited called Jim Borrett, Jim Barrett! I recently found out Seville was one of the refs who was given extensions at the age of 48 before retiring in 1991. He was a very good ref. You are correct, it was a very good Tottenham team.
comment in response to post
Alan Seville retired before the Premier League was formed and John Moules didn't referee on the Premier League. It is indeed Jim Borrett, I'm impressed! I was going to put the match details up if you were still struggling so I will anyway!

Correct - it's not Martin Bodenham. His years as a League referee was 1981 until 1994. He was the first referee to send off a Newcastle player in the Premier League in 1993 when he sent Pavel Srnicek against Coventry. He's not one of the best known English refs.

I've always had a soft spot for L/pool, but Klopp, I found irritating and annoying, especially after the new owners came in at N/castle. He was constantly having a go at us. But Slot is totally different he concentrates on L/pool and says little about other Clubs. I hope L/pool win the CL as well.
comment in response to post
Yup, it was a tough match tonight. It would be great if we won both the FA Cup and League Cup. The city of Newcastle would be buzzing if that happens.
comment in response to post
Well I'll have Liverpool winning the Premier League if we win the Cup! I grew to dislike Klopp when he was Liverpool's manager, he was constantly having a pop at us. But I've always had a soft spot for Liverpool and I genuinely hope they win the League.

Last domestic trophy - we won the Inter-City Fairs Cup in 1969 just before UEFA changed it to UEFA Cup.
comment in response to post
I think it's a coincidence as well! We also had a World Cup ref in charge when we got beat off Man C in the 1976 League Cup Final - the man who many think (including me!) was England's best ref ever - Jack Taylor.
comment in response to post
How many other countries have two refs going to tournaments? I'll answer for you not many! Italy, France, Germany & Spain often have two, we are comparable to other leading countries in terms of referees going to tournaments and international club tournaments.
comment in response to post
Er strange, both Oliver & Taylor have refereed at the last World Cup 2022, and the last two European Championships 2024 & 2020, they both reffed Quarter-Finals at Euro 2024 - I would consider those to be major international tournaments!
comment in response to post
The only English refs I know of (and recognise) from that era are the World Cup refs, Ling, Ellis & Leafe. Those three had something else in common - they all refereed my team Newcastle's FA Cup Final wins in 1951 (Ling), 1952 (Ellis) & 1955 (Leafe).
comment in response to post
I've never heard of him - I'm impressed!
comment in response to post
One of Atwell's first matches back when he returned to the Premier League was the last time Newcastle won at Man C in a League Cup tie - he was probably useless that night as well!
comment in response to post
The stupidity of Mike Riley! I wasn't certain if you were still on when he got on. I remember him reffing us against Wolves when we got back into the PL. He cautioned 12 players. They targeted Joey Barton because of his reputation. Karl Henry was a thug he kicked everything that moved!
comment in response to post
We're you still on the Premier League when he got promoted to the Football League?
