No, sun dogs are large spots of light which appear on one or both sides of the Sun and are level with it. They tend to have a reddish edge towards the Sun and a bluish-white tail away from it.

A lovely description. When we have to good fortune, and time, to stop and notice these things it really is like the world repeatedly gives us gifts. I’ve never seen alpenglow on high mountains, but I’ve seen a lesser version in Scotland.

*Hides head in hands* Oh no, I don’t know that song. Will have to listen to it. And thank you! It was an incredible evening. I couldn’t pull myself away.

I was going to mention that, up until now, I’ve only seen them photographed from very cold locations. So the pillars you saw must have been fairly high up? (Sod’s Law about your lack of a tripod. 😂)

Ooh, this is interesting Nick! They certainly look the part (although I’m no expert.) I’ve never seen them photographed from the UK before. Thanks for sharing!

Awh, James! It’s quite overwhelming to see so many finches like that, isn’t it? Such a rarity nowadays. Moves you to the core. Thanks for mentioning my blog. What a wildlife rich world it must have been long ago. Can’t help but feel acute sadness about that. So much wonderment, lost.

Awh, thanks Cian! I kind of like that, being a ‘story’, it’ll vanish in 24 hours time though.

Were they showing all the colours of the spectrum?

Thank you. Where did you get this chart from? It's different from the one I've been looking at but I'd like to be able to check as many charts as possible.

Clear, biting, frosty, cold winter weather is my absolute favourite.
