This. Let’s be done with the whole “run government like a business” bs, shall we?

I had the great privilege of serving in the EIS Class of 2015, responding to dozens of disease outbreaks and novel health threats. The program is a crowned jewel of U.S. public health and a model for other countries. Cutting this program does not, in any way, make our country healthier.

I don't understand what the administration is thinking here. This makes it so much more likely that a terrible epidemic will emerge. Are they just hoping that if there are no investigators no one will notice? These cuts are going to lead to so many preventable deaths.

i am going to put a finer point on this: executive orders are not laws. and they certainly are not royal decrees. they are interpretations of existing law for the purposes of enforcement. the fact that so many people are treating them as laws is actually driving me a bit insane.

I think it's worth repeating plainly that a federal judge halted Musk's federal funding freeze nearly two weeks ago but funds are still very much being frozen in violation of the court order.

Your periodic reminder that no tax cut in the history of tax cuts has ever paid for itself.

It would cost $160M per year to retrofit EVERY public K-12 classroom in the US with a Corsi-Rosenthal Box (and students could learn by helping to build them). Estimate includes capital cost, filter replacement, duct tape and electricity, w/ 3-year average. More ... www.today.com/health/cold-...

Just received this photo from a friend of a warehouse in Kinshasa. These are tuberculosis medications--ALREADY PAID FOR--that aren't being distributed due to the Trump Administration's stop work order. TB treatment is being interrupted in SO many patients around the world. What does that mean? (1/2)

Exactly 100 years ago, F. Scott Fitzgerald saw it coming: "They were careless people...they smashed up things and creatures and then retreated back into their money or their vast carelessness or whatever it was that kept them together, and let other people clean up the mess they had made."

This is evil. www.nytimes.com/2025/02/06/h...

Republicans ran into the room to SHEILD Elon Musk from having to come and speak to Congress. They want their billionaire takeover done behind closed doors. The people deserve transparency. No one elected Elon Musk.

Grimly evergreen.

1. I keep saying this, but it’s important to try to slow things down. It’s something that the Democrats really don’t get. You can win a war by losing every battle slowly.

If this happens - and if Musk et al get control of BLS - then all economic bets are off. I can’t say it any more plainly than that.

Thom Tillis, who repeatedly insisted that any kind of gun regulation from the Biden administration was deeply unconstitutional and a sign of a power-mad presidency, has a much more relaxed attitude when it's a private citizen commandeering federal agencies and seizing all your personal data.

There’s no need for a new law and you’re never going to get it passed in the minority anyway. Just demand that the authorities apply the current laws to stop the actions that are already illegal

I prefer not to bring politics into this account, but it's critical that US citizens make noise about this situation. So I offer a suggestion about what you can do on Monday morning, based on working on the periphery of Congress years ago.🧵 apnews.com/article/dona...

This is criminal and must be stopped now!

CNN reporting that DOGE personnel attempted to access security systems and classified information at USAID, threatened to call US Marshals to intervene on their behalf. USAID security officials now on leave after standing their ground.

How is there not a single Democrat Senator or Representative who has stepped up over an entire weekend where Elon Musk is clearly unwinding American democracy inside US govt buildings???

This study made some waves on social media yesterday. It purports to show that CO2 concentration doesn’t correlate with covid transmission. Let’s talk about this, I have some thoughts. www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...

Trump’s paying five times more per per deportee just so he can have images of sending them back on military planes. www.reuters.com/world/americ...

Credible reports of NSF, DOE, EPA and CDC enforcing the illegal impoundment order from Trump's OMB in contravention of Judge AliKhan's temporary injunction.

So if I’m understanding today correctly, the world’s richest person Elon Musk, whom no one elected, is taking over federal payment systems and employee data while the federal employees who investigate and prosecute public corruption are being fired en masse.

Oh my goodness! This is absolutely horrible. What has happened to the LA Times I subscribed to for years. I ended that subscription a couple months ago, and this story makes sure that I made the right decision. I want to support journalism, but journalism is not what is happening at the LA Times.

“If the freeze is not stopped, I might lose my house.” Read STAT’s @ericboodman.bsky.social on how the funding freeze at NSF is affecting scientists. www.statnews.com/2025/01/30/t...

I don't understand why sane members of congress haven't pushed back strenuously against this Autocratic Rule by Executive Order attempt that Trump is running. Trump was narrowly elected as President not as some supreme ruler. Many of these EOs are unconstitutional. Don't obey them without a fight.

Trump is destroying everything so fast it is hard to maintain focus, but the defunding of grants needs to be stopped now. Politicians need to be educated on this and act immediately to prevent long term harm.

“it’s probably a black person’s fault this bad thing happened” as a reflexive explanation is just a racist statement, there’s not a level of substantiation that makes it not racist bsky.app/profile/pgou...

I actually wish the media would stop using "DEI" and "diversity hiring" and just get to the essence of the thing and ask: "Are you saying that this crash was caused by desegregating the races?" And see what happens.

Just so we're clear, the Federal government isn't bloated with employees. There are about the same number of federal employees as there were in the eighties. And this is while the US Population increased by about fifty percent during that same period.
