Wow! Zipf's law in whale songs!!

My first PhD project is out there. Thank you to my advisor @psmaldino.bsky.social and to mentor, co-author and friend @babeheim.bsky.social for encouraging and helping build this exciting and insightful collaboration. Onwards!

Why does Western paleolithic cave art strongly prefer animal side views and often abbreviations? Our new #eSymb preprint (osf.io/preprints/ps... w Pagnotta, Psujek, Mendoza Straffon and Tylén ) challenges long-held assumptions about these artistic choices based on cogsci experiments. 1/

Updated preprint on this paper (w/ Greg Bryant). The focus is on musical distortion, but we also provide a more general framework/model for the evolution of cultural traits that balance (a) adaptive function, (b) ingroup coordination, and (c) outgroup differentiation. osf.io/preprints/ps...

One of my favorite reads from last year - Eve!

Books fans! 📖 What is your next book to read❓ Our study shows that two mechanisms drives people reading choices - enjoyment driven and information driven. We also found curiosity fosters people reading enjoyment and encourages exploratory readings. Read our new preprints doi.org/10.21203/rs....

it’s people

The network is updated, with a better search function! Apologies to those whose communities are still not present in this graph. I will get to it after the holidays, along with other insights on academic communities on bsky based on this network!

One of my favs!

It's possible that my filtering algorithm wasn't as very good to catch em all. I'll be updating the graph soon!

Fascinating and thought-provoking map of links between academic starter packs on bsky - I am sure @mjafreeman.bsky.social will find of interest!

🧪📊 Nice overview of the network of academic starter packs in bsky.

mind blowing

I loved this one too!!

Thanks @fearbrain.bsky.social 😊 🙏

First day of graph theory in my discrete math class. This pops into my feed on the way to the lecture hall. Great example. Thanks @ketikagarg.bsky.social !

This is great work - very cool to explore

So v pleased to see others enjoy my labor of love 🌟! Since it has blown up a smidge - I'll try to create a system to keep the network up to date as soon as I find some down time!

This is excellent! Fascinating network analysis that I am clearly going to spend too much time playing with today...

New preprint: osf.io/preprints/os... How is knowledge transmitted across generations in a foraging society? Together with @danielredhead.bsky.social, we explore how two types of knowledge are shared in a BaYaka community: long-term foraging skills and short-term information about food locations

Non-White scientists appear on fewer editorial boards, spend more time under review, and receive fewer citations www.pnas.org/doi/10.1073/...

Thanks! Glad to see others enjoy this labor of love 😊

Hello new followers! I am a curious cognitive scientist, with a background in semiotics, a strong focus on quantitative and computational methods and meta-science and scattered interests in how we think, learn and function through conversations. For a taste of my work, a thread of threads: 1/

1st post on bsky - about bsky! I was fascinated with academic starter packs and made an interactive network to see academic communities and how they connect - a map of knowledge! link to an interactive & searchable network: ketikagarg.github.io/blueSkyAcade...

An excellent write up!! I'll add that these challenges are further amplified by international academics, esp from the global south, with the perpetual uncertainty of where "home" will be in the next few years and the lack of nearby family support that could potentially add optimism to plans 🥲

We had heard about the challenges posed by motherhood within academia, but what about the previous stage? @ecfreewoman.bsky.social & I wrote our story for @science.org on how the academic system makes it almost impossible for women to even plan for a family ❤️‍🩹: www.science.org/content/arti...

New paper on the complexity of danger in the real world and how this led us to evolve both specialized and generalized survival strategies. It attempts to bring together the theories of Panksepp, LeDoux, and Feldman-Barrett and align them with ethology. www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...

Massive congratulations to Cassie & the rest of the lab for this great paper: www.science.org/doi/10.1126/... Chimpanzee population inter connectivity predicts sharing complex, cumulative culture (but not simple culture that can be invented independently) 🤩

We're hiring an assistant professor at the intersection btw cognitive modeling of language / social interaction, computational ling / lang technologies. Exciting environment / great work-life balance / amazing students. international.au.dk/about/profil... Get in touch if interested!

Really lovely review of my book in The Quarterly Review of Biology by @adrimaldoc.bsky.social. www.journals.uchicago.edu/doi/full/10....
