Good ideas. Could be aging logic board, but cleaning out any issues in the “file tree” is a good place to start. For safe mode, restart then immediately hold down the shift key. Do not let go until you see the startup progress bar. You have limited resources to access but Disk Utility is available

Restart, and when you see the apple logo, hold down option-command-P-R and don’t let go until it chimes again. :) It will take a bit longer to boot up as it hopefully rebuilds the index. Then just keep an eye on Activity Monitor app to make sure nothing is sucking up resources. :)

Possibly something is stuck in indexing? Have you tried zapping the PRAM. BTW I assume you have a Time Machine backup as now would be the time to make sure you have one if not.
