Michael Young coined the phrase "meritocracy" as satire, and then he fathered Toby Young in case people didn't get the joke.

Drugged to the gills, the two of them. Some enterprising future historian will write a fun weekend read of a book about it.

good morning, ICE must be destroyed morning

이렇게 수정된 짤 발견! 누가 만들었나 🤣

Seibu Railway has released new manner posters encouraging passengers to be considerate while riding the train. These posters highlight common issues like blocking doors, loud conversations, and taking up excess space.

thought it would be funny to watch some Roadrunner cartoons on acid but ten seconds in we're all silent out front of the tv, awed by the desolate beauty of these desert landscapes and struck by the emptiness of the world. should these two lone living souls not seek solace in one another

The Ludwig Kaas rule is never wrong: a cynical transactional ally of evil is more morally culpable than a true believer in evil, because the true believer is one moral epiphany away from ceasing to do evil. Insincere goatfuckers are worse than sincere ones, to use @kenwhite.bsky.social ‘s metaphor

"Facism is the act of self-deception in service of making your own life more painful, solely for the payoff of making life more painful for people you dislike."

Look, the thing about LLMs: Is it always accurate? No. Can you count on it to stay online? No. Does it learn and adapt properly? No. Is it efficient? Also no. Is it environmentally friendly? Definitely not. Is it respectful to artists? Fully no. Is it legal? Sorta. Is it everywhere? Hell yes bro

Look none of this is difficult. The billionaires want us to hate each other. They're buying every newspaper and social media company to flood the space with bots and hate speech to keep us fractured and divided. And we could do that - and tear each other apart - or we could try to fix things.

here come old laptop he come bootin up slowly he got broken touchpad he need one more update he got no space on this pc one thing i can tell you its got no warranty

Somebody’s grandma is trapped in a crystal at the Glendale Galleria

I think a lot about this quote from Anaïs Nin’s diary from 1939-1944: “America is in even greater danger because of its cult of toughness, its hatred of sensitivity, and someday it may have to pay a price for this, because atrophy of feeling creates criminals”.

Reminder Superman is not a power fantasy, he's an altruism fantasy. The idea of someone with godlike powers using them solely for good (with an antagonist who is a billionaire, who by definition do the opposite) was dreamt up by Jewish kids in the 30s and its just as if not more relevant now.

It is time.

As it has been requested and seems pertinent, the 5 Rules of Crime: Rule 1: Where there is value, there is crime. Rule 2: A fine is a price. Rule 3: Nothing ever stops until a Rich White Guy goes to jail. Rule 4: There are no Moriartys Rule 5: Everyone can be conned.

I've said it before, I'll say it again: We are not a 50/50 country. We are a gerrymandered and voter suppressed country. Should we ever resolve those issues (...), then, perhaps, we'll know the actual extent of our political divisions.

Rosebush in Blossom, 1889

“I don’t think there’s a trend towards actual conservatism in the Valley — there’s a trend towards monopoly and corruption, and that’s led a bunch of VCs directly to Trump.” www.status.news/p/nilay-pate...

An ex-NY Times columnist and Ivy League grad interviewed a billionaire about how he, the world’s richest man, and several other billionaires helped another billionaire/Ivy League grad/real estate mogul world defeat an HBCU grad to reclaim the most powerful office in the world. The headline:

as long as journalists and pundits act as if they are amateur political strategists & not people trying to understand and tell the truth about the world, they are going to take the implicit view that voters can never be wrong, which then demands endless explanation of their morally blameless choice

I think this is the key we are all sitting here asking how the fuck THIS campaign - this awful fucking campaign - from a visibly declining Trump results in quite possibly not only an EC victory but a PV victory and the answer is that most people no longer see what we see

I think that last night represents a significant shift in partisan politics, one where the old divisions of Conservative and Liberal are starting to merge with Low-Trust and Institutionalists, and I do not like where it's going. cooperlund.medium.com/the-low-trus...

The Old Tower in the Fields, 1884

-2% for being black. -2% for being a woman. That’s all it took to make it this close (it is, in fact, not over). And the fact that the people in charge were more scared of ruining America’s image (in their heads) than they were of allowing insurrectionists and traitors to roam free.

If there has been a dominant cultural theme in the last several years, at every level and on every side, I feel like maybe it has been "people who are slowly sliding toward irrelevance, but still have a long way to go before they actually get there, quickly become the worst version of themselves".

“Oh you have a day off on your French tour, I bet you’re going to go do a lot of touristy stuff” I am an introvert who has just spent four days being “on,” please don’t underestimate my ability to lie on the hotel room chaise longue listening to the lofi girl YouTube channel all day long

Since it's Halloween tomorrow, I think I'd be failing in my duty to you all if I didn't post this again. Some people put in the effort. Some people really try hard. And then... some people do THIS. Zardoz your god gave you the gift of the gun. The gun is good...

People always point out that taxing the super-wealthy wouldn't actually raise all that much revenue, but it's becoming clearer that the primary benefit is just taking away their money.

As we head down the stretch, remember: You're the arbiter of what you choose to engage with, and why, and to what extent, and how. If someone else wants to tell you how much to engage on anything, thank them for their passion and do your own thing. Take care of yourself and your own brain.

I guess it has fallen to me, the humor columnist, to endorse Harris for president wapo.st/3UqHWRM

From Captain Marvel Adventures #35 (May 1944), a story of Cap traveling to an alternative Earth & meeting Reltih, the Reverse Hitler, who is as evil as our Hitler & who dies in the end. Billy then delivers an inspirational speech telling listeners not to give up hope that our Hitler will die too.

I am a HUGE Farscape fan - to the point that I suffer through the goofy Ori seasons of Stargate specifically cause of Ben Browder and Claudia Black. So this makes perfect sense to me www.giantfreakinrobot.com/ent/scifi/fa...

This is a Halloween vibe I wish we had more of.

My Collider article from last month, "The 10 Best Folk Horror Movies of the 2020s (So Far)" was apparently SUPER popular, so I was asked to add five more entries. Here is the new, improved, and expanded version, for your reading pleasure:

Art Nouveau is when stuff looks like it was made by Elves. Art Deco is when stuff looks like it was made by Dwarves.
