Such a bore

Listen to me, Democrats everywhere, you have got to be saying this kind of shit right now all the time like she has been. The literal least you can do. At least pretend like you have a fucking spine.

Le Monde reporting that a French scientist traveling to Houston to attend a conference was denied entry to US after a search of his phone & computer revealed messages critical of Trump's science cuts, "which [says CPB] conveyed hatred of Trump & could be qualified as terrorism". Computer confiscated

Unbelievable: DHS agents armed with search warrants authorizing them to search students’ rooms went into 2 Columbia University residences today. No arrests made. “I am .. heartbroken,” says the university’s president. “I understand the immense stress our community is under.”

I just heard this as well. The entire staff of the National Center for Education Statistics, created in 1867, has been fired.

They have nothing. Nothing. They kidnapped a legal resident, shipped him across the country, denied access to his attorney, and are now trying to deport him. And their only justification for it is either protected speech or vague descriptions of alleged crimes committed by other people.

It’s amazing to find out at this late date how much the rule of law depended on people simply deciding, on a voluntary, daily basis, not to break the law.

It's fine to outsource important skills to AI, because we will always have access to this incredibly resource-intensive, money-burning technology with no foreseeable profit model.

This is the kind of thing we *should* be spending money on! www.inquirer.com/health/medic... 🎁 link

Let us speak of joy. Tell me about something wonderful that happened to you this week.

I had fun recording this little video for Elsevier's Researcher Academy about how peer reviewers can productively approach registered reports. researcheracademy.elsevier.com/publication-...

@ashajournals.bsky.social now offering this option in Editorial Manager. Bluesky appears to have, as has previously been reported, the juice 👍

One danger of embracing generative AI as a learning device and in language assistance is that you're letting the keepers of that AI have power over what you learn and how you write. It will be programmed with biases, unintentional but often *quite* intentional, that you will unknowingly adopt.

this might be the case for *some* aspects of *some* jobs alas, if you don't have solid domain expertise knowledge to verify llm output, you're done

Measles has a 12% mortality rate in unvaccinated young children. Children cannot be vaccinated until they are at least 12 months old. And if infants need to be kept home and out of daycare to avoid potentially fatal measles outbreaks... Guess who that removes from the workforce. (Women.)

I know it’s in a different league ✝️, but props to my uni @setonhall.bsky.social for continuing to support DEIA

This is a disaster for the people of Louisiana, surrounding states, & everyone who needs to travel to or be in contact w/people traveling from there. People warned that "you do you" means eugenics when it comes to public health, & begged folks not to normalize it, but they weren't listened to.

The passive authoritarian tense

This period under Musk/Trump feels like early February in 2020—when a terrible thing was happening with breakneck speed, and the people paying close attention were hair-on-fire about it while the rest of the country carried on as normal.

Like, I would like this from my uni

Now would be a good time for universities to be very clear about what faculty should be telling students about the 💩 show going on in DC. For example, I’d love to know what to do if ICE shows up or they come for my data… 🤯 #AcademicSky

It’s one of these - I have nothing to add

This is exactly what you do not do

The OSF is available for preservation of datasets that need saving. osf.io Contact [email protected] if you need assistance

Once again, a fundamental reason why so many academics despise Trump, Vance, Musk & company is that we’ve all had our share of The Guy Who Didn’t Do The Reading But Demands to Be Heard

As an academic journal editor, I need to get this out of my system: Do *not* email me asking about the status of your paper 4 weeks after submission, especially when you can see that status in the submission portal

One of the worst things about AI is that it devalues Actually Doing Something. The act of researching or reading is valuable in and of itself. If we're just asking the computer to do everything for us we're turning into the slobs from Wall-E.

Yup. Microsoft automatically switched me to the $99.99/year version with Spicy Autocomplete. You have to go all the way through "cancel subscription" to be presented these options and get the $69.99/year one you actually chose.

The assault on NIH is a test for how the national media covers the Trump admin: Trump is shutting down medical research! That is easy to communicate. Will they treat it as a 5 alarm fire in a way that forces the government to respond, or will they downplay & caveat it?

Fellow scientists, please consider speaking w/ media about what this means for "regular Americans." The link below is to contact a reporter who's collecting stories about the unfolding NIH situation - pls share anonymously or on record. @anniewaldman.bsky.social www.propublica.org/people/annie...

Good grief

all I’m saying is it’s nice to not be teaching ethics after the last 9 years

I don't think I have ever seem a norm go from widely accepted to completely irrelevant as quickly as the importance of minimizing conflicts of interests
