[whispers provocatively] the 1850 fugitive slave act is the model: reactionaries have the right to extend their authority across state lines, and their opponents have to actively assist them

Some inspired stuff here, very cool (I’m especially loving the young John Goodman as the Judge, especially after his incredible performance in 10 Cloverfield Lane. Would absolutely watch this adaption.)

Oh wow, can absolutely see this and it rules. Great rec.
Granted, it’s been years since I’ve read it, but the character of the Kid still seems kinda nebulous or more like a ‘fucked up Everyman’ type, but I could be off. Can’t think of an actor for him. Emile Hirsche is in my head for some reason.

It’s the only book that’s made me miss my stop on the subway twice while on my way to work, and though I think I agree with you that it’s not necessarily unfilmable, I’m having a hard time thinking of who could pull off the Judge or the kid. Perhaps especially under the radar character actors.

This is so cool to learn about—thank you! So my guy would’ve had some of the comforts of home while sitting out the worst of the winter mud

You’re right, could be! These are from New Port News, VA where he witnessed the battle between the Monitor and the Merrimack (ironclads) from the shoreline, as well as the sinking of the USS Cumberland. I believe it was a winter camp that was getting ready to move out, but I’m a little rusty.

I like the artwork they’d sometimes have at the top of paper and envelopes (I’m guessing from the camp sutler) during the Civil War. Here are two examples from a relative of mine who went from drummer boy to color sergeant for the 2nd NY Infantry 1861-63.

Greatest American who ever lived (though I guess I’m pretty biased).

Honestly, I’d rather them just say “Trump is basically a dictator, Republicans can do whatever the hell they want and we’ll cheer them on.” than demand we dignify them jerking off to their false self-perception of cleverness about how transgender isn’t covered by anti-gender discrimination laws.
