New paper: The future Barents Sea-A synthesis of physical, biogeochemical, and ecological changes toward 2050 and 2100 Very nice interdisiplinary Nansen Legacy effort, including @jakobdoerr.bsky.social @islarsh.bsky.social @khuongdinh.bsky.social doi.org/10.1525/elem...

One more paper out this week: Would you like to know what the future of the Barents Sea looks like? You can find many of the details in our paper. A mammoth effort led by Marius and the Nansen Legacy team! online.ucpress.edu/elementa/art...

Paper out, but better to have open access to the published version!

I had my first meeting with the Asian Society for Hydrobiology today as a new ASH Board of Executives member. I was immediately impressed by the diversity of expertise, languages, and cultures—something I feel is somewhat missing in our increasingly globalized world (1/2):

This weekend, KU Leuven celebrated the 600th anniversary of its founding. It was a great privilege for me to spend four years pursuing my PhD at KU Leuven.

How can mesocosms help tackle grand ecological challenges in aquatic ecosystems? 🌊🌍 Check out our open-access Oikos Forum article, out today: 🔗 doi.org/10.1111/oik.... @oikosjournal.bsky.social

Happy #InternationalDayOfWomenAndGirlsInScience to all the kickass #womeninSTEM 🙌💪❤️ One stereotype I love to smash is when people ask who (i.e. which man) is driving our research boat… 😉 I had fun making this reel last year, 5 months pregnant 😎💪 Let’s continue to break barriers together 🫶👊

Ho Thi Thanh Van, a chemical scientist in Vietnam, spoke to Nature about her work to make fuel cells cheaper and more efficient and her research on medicinal plants native to Vietnam. #WomeninSTEM 🧪

Funa Techno (mega) Canal is one of many serious problems in the Mekong River and the greater Mekong region in 6 countries: China, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam Better plans are needed for mitigating the ecological impacts of Cambodia's Funan Techo Canal www.nature.com/articles/s41...

wow ?

A special issue of Science on polar regions.

Ischnura rufostigma @Phan Toan

A first job related post. We have an open PhD student position in freshwater microbial ecology in our lab. www.jobbnorge.no/en/available...

An inspiring research: Ecological interactions amplify cumulative effects in marine ecosystems | Science Advances www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...

Wow, I received two requests for reviewing manuscripts in 9 minutes from just one journal, and already many requests this week.

Happy Lunar New Year 2025: The Year of the Snake!

A very nice paper: onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10....

A new species of supergiant sea bug found in a Vietnamese "restaurant"! A new species of supergiant Bathynomus A. Milne-Edwards, 1879 (Crustacea, Isopoda, Cirolanidae) from Vietnam, with notes on the taxonomy of Bathynomus jamesi Kou, Chen & Li, 2017 zookeys.pensoft.net/article/1393...

The first research vessel that we had: R/V Josephine. It was a gift from a University Rector. With this, we trained quite some students (1 PhD, and several master and bachelor students) to do plankton research in the tropical coastal ecosystems (Vietnam). (A reminder from my supervisor's Facebook)

Highly recommended!

Fieldwork-based research was the first and is still my main motivation to become an ecologist. Experiences from tropical rain forests, mangroves, and lagoons to the central Arctic Ocean are invaluable and nothing can be replaced. www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...

📢 Apply now! We are recruiting an Associate Professor / Professor of Evolutionary Genomics to join our innovative research community! Find out more about the position and apply: https://buff.ly/4gIRTDf

Still need more reasons to embrace vegetables? Read the new paper out in @naturemicrobiol.bsky.social today from @cibiocm.bsky.social that shows how healthy plant-based foods are associated with gut microbiota that favours healthy outcomes. www.nature.com/articles/s41...

Beneath the ice, life is preparing for the spring bloom

Happy new year 2025: Not the first and probably not the last time starting a new year with some lab work on the diapausing Arctic zooplankton: Calanus hyperboreus from 88 degrees North :)

Snow bathing :)

Interested in multiple stressor research in rivers? Interested in a PhD under excellent supervision in one of Europe’s largest freshwater research centres? We seek 8 doctoral researchers for the CRC RESIST at the University of Duisburg-Essen! sfb-resist.de/people/open-... #rivers #PhDjobs

Whether there are thresholds/tipping points for ecological responses to global change/multiple stressors? A very interesting paper! www.nature.com/articles/s41...

Christmas time, like the summer holiday, turns out to be the only time of the year for more focused writing. Wishing you a Merry Christmas!

My Department at La Trobe University is advertising for a continuing Level B (Lecturer) Ecologist position. Details here: careers.pageuppeople.com/533/caw/en/j...

Dear colleagues, Could you recommend a couple of papers on methods to measure/quantify maladaptive responses in (lab/mesocosm or field) warming experiments on invertebrates? Thank you very much in advance! Kind regards, Khuong

📣 We are recruiting! Please spread the word! We look to hire an associate professor in animal ecology, specializing in evolutionary ecology. Apply by Feb 7 2025. Come join us in Uppsala, Sweden! Application page and contact info 🔗👇 #ecology #evolution #job www.uu.se/en/about-uu/...

Agent Orange: My only paper gets >11,7k views after two years. Nice, but the main point is still about Agent Orange effects on wildlife. It deserves comprehensive studies and assessments. Also, a bit of the history and more, here and there, in my country. pubs.acs.org/doi/full/10....

Welcomed back to the Arctic Polar night with the northern lights from an airplane and lots of snow on the ground. Feeling a bit emotional this time with the closing meeting of the Nansen Legacy project after 7 years. Such a journey! A great privileged to be part of it!
