And as Shayla tries to find her voice on the final page, I was thinking of the only thing that has ever kept us going—believing that we have a voice, believing that we are worth investing in, and believing in those day-blind stars—which are there, whether we can see them or not.

The end of When the World Turned Upside Down acknowledges the rockiness of the path. It is not explicit about the grief of the aftermath but I was thinking of those post-movement days when everything fell apart.

There have been decades of grief and decades of believing in those day-blind stars, working toward the day they will shine brightly. My daughter has not been through these cycles, so it’s very different for her, but my characters have been grappling with these questions.

In moments like these, I always think of our ancestors. I think of the many, many, many cycles of struggle that has marked our existence in this country. I think of the deep grief of my parents’ generation who had worked so boldly, brilliantly and beautifully for another kind of nation.
