Inclusive early education is key to building inclusive schools. The Government must measure the success of its childcare expansion by whether all children - including children with SEND - can access it.

We also support the long term actions needed to make childcare truly inclusive, such as a workforce strategy, safeguarding access to provision for disadvantaged children and removing the parental work criteria.

Our early years policy asks remain; reorganise funding, champion truly inclusive nurseries & adopt the Kids Navigator model. We support the calls for urgent action to open up places for disabled children, including increasing & ringfencing SEND funding & making it more flexible.

While some families see costs halved, those who don’t qualify are paying £105 more per week - which will affect many parents of disabled children who simply cannot go to work.

Given media reports suggesting disabled children’s rights will be watered down, the Government must urgently clarify and consult on their plans for reform.

We agree that local examples show ‘it can be done’, but the Government must now set out a concrete plan for how they will deliver this change, by directly working with children, parents and professionals from every part of the system.

She is also right to say that ‘inclusion spreads beyond the classroom’ – disabled children should be able to enjoy art, sports and culture as much as their peers.

The Government has a golden opportunity to create a truly inclusive education system. To do this, they must listen and consult young people, parents and experts, or risk replacing one broken system with another.

Parents of children with SEND are looking for reasonable adjustments and appropriate support - not special measures. Everyone agrees change is needed, especially in delivering assessment and support at the earliest opportunity, when it can make the biggest difference.

Most SEND pupils are already in mainstream school - the problem is many schools aren't equipped to meet their needs, forcing a shockingly high number into home schooling. Even families who secure an EHCP find their child's support is not forthcoming or only partially delivered.

Sustainable funding that recognises and factors in the resources needed to support babies and toddlers with SEND is vital, because every child should have an equal opportunity to play, learn, grow and thrive.

If the Government took the time to listen to parents and providers they would find a treasure trove of practical solutions that could help reform the system and make life better – not worse – for disabled children and their families.

Peter also met with parents to hear firsthand about their experiences of the SEND system and what changes would make the biggest difference for families.
