🛍️ This is a harsh headline. It’s true lower income shoppers are spending less, but most B&M/Aldi/Poundland shoppers are now ABC1. Their woes are down to range/proposition issues. Lidl/Home Bargains are still outperforming, so it’s not a sector-wide problem

🎅 …and if anyone wants to get me a Christmas gift card (better late/early than never!), then Greggs has got you covered 👌 #keepingchristmasgoing

🥤 A 10-pack of vodka alcopops costs just 40p per bottle… which is 20% cheaper than a 10-pack of non-alcoholic pop, also on special offer 🤯 *at Aldi for anyone who with a craving for fake WKD this weekend

Funny how different we are from our US cousins: in the face of economic and geopolitical uncertainty, British consumers are reining in spending and putting off big ticket purchases… while some Americans are “doom spending”!

Y'all *still* don't believe me, huh? Here's my longer form explanation over on LinkedIn:

I used to think that a whole pint was 'perfect for your pint glass', but no, you need a 30ml gap at the top apparently. #guinnessshortage #shrinkflation

@starflyergold.bsky.social Was that you complaining?! 🐟

Great piece, and it's not dissimilar to AWS's origin story as an accidental cloud giant. www.ft.com/content/08eb...

Nobody believes me… anyway, here are the updated ONS numbers from Dec 2024 showing earnings vs inflation: Even average public sector earnings (+26% in 5 years) have grown faster than inflation (+25%). Food prices have risen faster, but the basket of all goods has only grown by 24%

📈 It’s easy to grumble about shop prices going up, but they have actually *fallen* in real terms: average earnings have risen by around 28% in the last 5 years - that’s faster than groceries (c.25%) and non-food (c.20%)… …the real reason we’re all worse off is energy price rises (50%+) ⚡️

☔️ WHY DO I ALWAYS LOSE MY UMBRELLA?!

Before you get too excited about “radicalised young women”, bear in mind in the tiny font footnotes it says this chart is *relative* to the wider population, not *absolute*… …so a better question might be: why are Germans getting more right wing *except* young women?

♻️ Great that @transportforlondon.bsky.social has “dry” mixed recycling bins in Overground stations… …not so great that they are outside in the rain 🚮 #geniusdesign!

I'm sorry, what?! This is the best bit of the Tesco app...

While I appreciate that the ONS probably has bigger priorities (*cough* Labour Force Survey), forecasting Retail Sales is a mug's game while the reported numbers are so volatile and contrary to other industry indicators... Also of note: December's downward revision 🤷‍♂️

📈 The problem with ONS's obsession with month-on-month price changes is that this assumes the data is correct... Last month's flight price sampling date assumed passengers flying home on 24 & 31 Dec - *of course* they were lower. Doesn't mean they've skyrocketed in January 🙄

Me 🤝 craft beer blackboards in unfamiliar cities* - 2025 edition… 🇩🇰 Copenhagen 📌 Dia'legd Ølbar, Vesterbro *surely better than Eurovision?

40 minute journey on the Lizzie Line... so far has taken me 2 hours, and I'm not even there yet. Apparently the train is delayed because of no train crew, which is odd because the last 8 trains have been cancelled, so you'd think there would be 8 spare crews with sweet FA to do, but 🤷‍♂️

Just heard @jackelsom.bsky.social tell @listentotimesradio.bsky.social that Nigel Farage is Gen X… Oi! He’s not one of us! Those Boomers can keep him…

It’s completely crazy that this development of much needed homes in derelict land next to a tube station was ever blocked in the first place (by the Tory MP at the time, predictably…) HT @ianvisits.co.uk

1. The danger of “averages” 2. Inflation may be 2% but, as I’ve said before, it’s still consumers’ #2 concern from my January survey…

Retail labour demand has fallen very quickly, more so than in wholesale. Job postings are ~40% lower than pre-pandemic levels.

☕️ Literally everything that’s gone wrong with Poundland in one very full shelf in a small town centre store…

This is hugely misleading advertising, all over Central London at the moment... There are legitimate reasons for using Trainline - but being cheaper is not one of them

This can be explained by one simple fact: ethnic minorities disproportionately live in London and other cities. Surprise! Now do this analysis weighted by region…

what on earth is going on with trousers

❤️ The best thing about Valentine’s? All those Dine In meal deals gonna be half price tomorrow 😋

I could have sworn I took more photos at AGB N1 - anyway this is a @queerbrewing.bsky.social beer and @kientan74.bsky.social is somewhere in the background.
