Another point might be that by the time someone realizes that it's not the career for them they are already locked in a contract.

This represents such a facile and shallow understanding of the military that I don't even know where to start. But I suppose a good start is that the majority of troops signed up when they were kids, often believing the lies they were told about what it would be like to be in service.
