The University of Pittsburgh confirmed Friday that there would be no new Ph.D. offers of admission while Pitt works to understand how reduced federal aid could impact the institution.

#BlackHistoryMonth: It's time for this "Dumping in Dixie" (title of a book I wrote in 1990) to end and we bury #environmentalracism forever! PFAS burden: Wisconsin ships toxic foam to Alabama Black Belt wisconsinwatch.org/2023/10/wisc... @wisconsinwatch @BullardCenter

Big day to be an infectious disease. Huge.

I got to snowshoe at the beach this weekend

As a science advocate, something I hear a lot is that people think government would be better if there were more scientists and physicians elected to Congress. Senator Bill Cassidy's cowardice in voting for RFK Jr, show us that expertise is useless if you have no morals.

RFK Jr. is a danger to public health. Every Republican senator who votes yes will own the consequences. When RFK Jr. follows anti-vax conspiracies instead of science, when he greenlights Trump's anti-abortion agenda, when he cuts healthcare for seniors — remember who voted yes.

I spend a lot of time teaching about the labor movement when I teach occupational health. I hope it conveys to my students that workers have had to fight for our safety and that fight never ends. Every OSH rule is written in blood.

Folks who were around in the early years know we built our Environmental Justice Movement from the bottom up with grassroots groups and in partnership with HBCU EJ Centers years before government embraced EJ. We'll keep working on EJ for All beyond next 4 years until we get the job done.

I'm proud to be giving another guest lecture on the misrepresentation and weaponization of science by transphobes, misogynists, and snake oil salespeople, and how we can frame our research more responsibly in light of it.

RFK jr has spread misinformation about herbicides causing "gender confusion." They don't, but the claims have helped earn him acclaim on the alt-right. My latest for @eenews.bsky.social , now with an open link www.eenews.net/articles/gay...

NIH funded my dissertation work identifying potential antidotes to phosphine, cyanide, and azide, and it supports my current work studying the spatial distribution of #PFAS sources. It also allows my colleagues and I to collaborate with impacted communities.

For those concerned about environmental justice, the EJScreen tool (which provides valuable mapping and screening data) has not yet been taken down, and the database can be downloaded. Act fast… www.epa.gov/ejscreen/tec...

The price of eggs in the US is spiking, mostly due to #H5N1 bird flu. Solving the problem requires urgent, important communications from the CDC & FDA* and rapid development of research by the NIH** * Currently paused by Executive Order ** Grant reviews now all canceled www.kcur.org/news/2025-01...

NEW: Why funding for the environmental justice movement must be anti-racist. "We must prioritize minority-serving institutions, BIPOC-led organizations and researchers to lead environmental justice efforts." @lauramardiaz.bsky.social @agentschangeej.bsky.social www.ehn.org/environmenta...

Some actions will be overt. But history suggests this administration may also try to use the language of science to weaken environmental and health protections and write regulations more favorable to industry. 1/ envirodatagov.org/3-ways-trump...

Yes, but... Remember that they don't care about truth, or science, or biology. Science alone won't win political battles. Being right doesn't mean we get to control the narrative. I recommend that scientists say things like "You're wrong about the biology, but also trans rights are human rights."

Scientists who work on government-funded DEI, equity, or health disparity work, I want to talk to you. How do you plan to continue your efforts in the face of this executive order calling for an end to DEI programs and initiatives? DM me or email gewin at me dot com.

The most "relevant" results that come up in a search of "abortion" on HHS.gov, the website for the federal Department of Health and Human Services, are several years old, from the first Trump administration.

Being an ally is a verb folks. Your trans & non-binary colleagues need your support more than ever. What's one thing you'll do to make your teaching/mentoring/science more gender inclusive? I love the work over at genderinclusivebiology.com if you need some pointers

Trump’s White House just withdrew the US from the Paris Climate Agreement and World Health Organization. This shameful embrace of science denial puts the entire world at greater risk of climate catastrophe and deadly pandemics.

I mostly don’t think it’s useful to engage with bio arguments here as the first/primary reaction (they don’t care that they’re wrong). We need to unequivocally support our trans and nonbinary pals and reject any forms of bioessentialism.

We don’t expect the Trump administration to abandon scientific principles and data wholesale but to weaponize them in service of special economic interests, following a playbook laid out in the 2018 Strengthening Transparency in Regulatory Science rule. envirodatagov.org/why-edgi-is-...

Weird that we have to say this, but the government doesn’t get to decide what gender a person is.

Biologists need to stand up against the increased transphobia coming. Also, I'd love to see more collaboration from within the trans community as well. We need more trans people to have a voice and be lifted up! The more the better!

Assigned reading from your resident biologist who reminds you that science evolves, including since that time a middle school teacher told you something about XY chromosomes during the Ford administration. 🏳️‍⚧️ Nature is queer AF 🌈 www.scientificamerican.com/video/how-ju...

Under a settlement with Ohio’s attorney general, GOP operative Pat Lee can never fundraise for charity in the state again.

I love my friend and their art

Let’s please in our capacity as public health skeeters work to refocus the conversation on H5N1 on occupational health. It is flu season and workers and handling potentially infected animals all over the country without adequate PPE.

Happy to announce that my Environmental Health students will be assigned The Jungle in its entirety this semester!

With these kinds of stories there is sometimes a temptation to judge. "How could they not know?!" is a reply we see a lot. Fight that urge. The truth is.. people.com/woman-tells-...

An NPR investigation found Louisiana health officials told staff to stop promoting vaccines for COVID, flu and mpox, holding flu shot events or otherwise encouraging the public to get those vaccines.

I really like to bring hot oatmeal wherever I go

We've just published a paper studying the impacts of PFAS contamination in two New England Communities. In brief, the PFAS source, organized community activism, and the support of government officials can improve outcomes like funding for cleanup and precautionary legislation. rdcu.be/d3fWi

This report is congruent with findings from our new paper - that contamination source has a big impact on community outcomes, specifically when it comes to funding. @pfasproject.bsky.social @laurelschaider.bsky.social
