This was, on its face at the moment it was published, not at all a "how it started" and very much a "Wow, Fareed Zakaria is even more of an idiot than we'd all thought."

In the Lane photo, I look a lot like my dad. In the Merriman photo, I look a little like my Uncle Dick — who was not even a blood relative! The stache is family, even when it's fake.

Don't ghost me or give me the silent treatment. Also: Don't date me. I'm married.

I made a rule when my kids were little: No kid music in the car.

No member of Congress has ever had a negative life outcome after losing their seat because they've lost their seat. Maybe they've committed a crime and had to pay for it or something, but none has ever collected an unemployment or welfare check. That kind of thing.

The ongoing covid pandemic that we've all decided to pretend is over. That or the climate catastrophe that we're doing everything we can to hasten. Some people talk about it, but a critical mass are ignoring it.

My kids aren't future, they're adult. Kids' concerns and problems, even when they're childish, are serious and real and valid to them. I promised myself I would treat my kids' childish concerns and problems that way, which my parents didn't. I didn't always succeed, but I tried.

Corpus Christi Bay by Robert Earl Keen None of the characters in that song have lives anything like mine or live in a place anything like where I do or do anything remotely like the things I do, or would do. And yet it's a song about my life. Music, right?

That's a #palinfey A parody that's indistinguishable from the thing being parodied, or vice versa.

I don't see how those songs, not to mention Kendrick's show, aren't patriotic? What's more patriotic than being a fierce critic of your country? I've criticized the US my whole life because I'm a patriot. I've never said a harsh word about, say, Belgium. I know nothing about it and care even less.

Some generational stuff has always been there. I had a co-worker, maybe 22, very pop-culturally savvy. This was maybe 1997, so I'm ~34. Monoculture was starting to fracture but was largely intact. They'd never heard of Mary Tyler Moore. That was kind of a first but I started noticing it a lot.
