Folklore: a gast is a ghost that appears especially in forests and on heaths (skogegast, heiegast), and that screams eerily. In some places the word is used for a species of owl, which people believed to be a gast. Etymology Low German, ‘spirit, apparition’, compare German Geist, English ghost

Among them was the boys' father Daniel, who was sent to the gas chamber the same day. Jacob himself was killed on 19 March 1943. Jacob's wife Sara and sons were also arrested and interned at Bredtveit, but released because of Sara's Danish passport. They later made it to Denmark and then to Sweden.

Upon arrival, all the brothers were taken to forced labor. Solly died barely two weeks after the selection. Hertze died on 3 March 1943, the same day that the Norwegian Jews from the Gotenland transport arrived at Auschwitz.
