#NIH cuts by #DOGE

Musk is killing the goose that lays the golden eggs.

This is a five-alarm fire 🔥 for US science 🧪. (We keep saying that, but it keeps being true 😭.) Trump and Musk are blocking *ALL* NIH grants ‼️ by "exploiting a loophole in the process"—stopping study sections & council meetings. Every biomedical researcher in the country should be screaming. 1/

#Missouri -- ok, this level of proposed government intrusion is terrifying.

“The American team has almost no experience in high-level international negotiation, no regional expertise on Ukraine and Russia, and no relevant foreign language knowledge."

The MMR vaccine is 97% effective at preventing measles infection. But infants under 12 months old are not eligible for the vaccine, leaving them vulnerable. When measles spreads due to low vaccination rates, it puts our youngest—and most defenseless—children at the greatest risk.

sad for US, but thanks Canada

A handful of billionaires now have unprecedented control over banking, the food we eat, our healthcare, and the information we receive. Many are now currying favor with Trump to avoid accountability and maintain their power. This is what oligarchy looks like.

I'm curious what Accenture, Deloitte, McKinsey, BCG, PWC & other high-priced consultants think about the DOGE 4-week engagement to analyze multi-trillion dollar complex businesses and make budget and employee cuts effective instantly across all divs. Furious? Laugh-crying? Moving overseas? #medsky

"carving nuggets from chickens still unhatched" -- beautiful prose!

Nothing else to say.

Can't believe we're up to episode 800! And thrilled to celebrate Phil and his career in this milestone episode. His research has spanned many areas, including the health impacts of lead poisoning, air pollution, pesticides, plastic pollution, and chemical pollution. @bostoncollege.bsky.social 🧪

The flying public needs answers. How many FAA personnel were just fired? What positions? And why?

Musk is hacking not fat but muscle from the budget.

Review (and thus funding) of research proposals through the NIH remains blocked. Just blocked in different ways than a week ago. Read the comments for more firsthand details.

HHS blocked posting indefinitely. Not enough press is being given to this back door approach to blocking NIH grants. If and when it is lifted will still be 35 days before study sections can be held

The healthcare of U.S. veterans will suffer under the Trump administration, which has fired more than 1000 employees of the Department of Veterans Affairs. #medsky taskandpurpose.com/news/veteran...

!!

This was one of RFK Jr.’s first orders after being sworn in. Just an astonishing denial of science and will cause so much pain to the 45 million Americans facing mental health challenges.

Tim Kaine on Fox News Sunday: Why isn't Trump getting the Republican leaders down in the White House and saying, 'here's what we're gonna do'? He's making all these cuts without Congress because he doesn't even think the Republican leadership will go along with him

NIH funding isn’t just for scientists. It’s for all of us. It supports research, labs, & jobs that save lives & improve our health & wellbeing. New cuts threaten critical infrastructure, slowing progress, eliminating jobs, & reducing economic output in every state www.nytimes.com/interactive/...

Nothing to worry about, just an administration official suggesting that the DOJ may prosecute a member of Congress for advising people about their rights. Happening right now. Right in front of us.

The headline doesn't do the article justice. Trump's admin is arguing that anything like Black Student Associations, Black History Month events, programs to retain minorities, etc are illegal and worthy of defunding the school. www.insidehighered.com/news/diversi...

Interesting

All my life I have studied democratization and autocratization. My 1st field trip was to newly democratic Argentina. I then added autocracies to my portfolio: Cuba, Ven, etc. I think I can recognize the stages of transition to authoritarianism. Here are the boxes Trump has already checked off.

“The goal of Trump--like all autocrats and dictators--is to make you feel that “resistance is futile,” but history shows that people standing up to that leader has inspired others to do the same.” @ruthbenghiat.bsky.social talks with @deanobeidallah.bsky.social open.substack.com/pub/deanobei...

Unemployment spikes in DC as Trump moves to fire thousands of federal workers www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news...

I’m old enough to remember when Klein said (a few days ago) that Trump wasn’t going through Congress because he was weak.

It's a horrendous flu season. It's killing kids, it's killing adults. It's killing people who were perfectly healthy before and people who, like most Americans, have chronic illness. It costs NOTHING to keep existing resources available. Our government is spending money to make Americans sicker.

Just talked to a friend whose spouse is a contractor for the VA. They are worried about their job and their future. But what shocked me was that they had no clue what happened at NIH, USDA, CDC, NOAA. The word is simply not getting out. The average American just doesn't know.
