Last year, I was overjoyed to receive an NIH NRSA fellowship to study toddler brains and caregiving effects on memory at Columbia. Last night, my grant was terminated.

I am sitting at my computer waiting to hear if my NIH grant is one of the 1/3 or more of all grants at my college that are canceled - it is on understanding the ways to generate the neuronal DIVERSITY that explains loss of cognition in Alzheimer's and also imps for autism. Was it flagged?

There is no level of dumb this man cannot reach.

men of the Supreme Court say: let them eat shit

what they said

I have just unsubscribed from Amazon Prime and any other thing that puts money into Jeff Bezos' pocket. Dear Washington Post - you defended democracy so many times - thank you - an OpEd page where the opinion is predetermined is neither journalism or democracy

Total bully tactics by the US president and VP. This is not diplomacy. This is not neutrality. This is siding with the aggressor and trying to finish off the victim. President Zelensky was the only one in the room to behave with dignity.

Trump and Vance yell and trash talk Zelensky while sucking Putin’s dick. That’s where we are at. A century of global leadership vaporized in a month.

Why is Gmail search totally unusable these days?! It searches every word I mention instead of all the words I mention like wtf

Today's @usatoday.com front page First US death from measles in 10 years First child to die from measles in 22 years in the US All of this fully preventable

Janet Mills is the best - thank you Janet for standing up.

So I did this today: banged out a couple hundred words of a pitch while managing lab, sent it to the opinion page editor at the newspaper my parents still somehow get in print, and got back a "yes" in, I absolutely kid you not, under 15 minutes

This judge is amazing:

I have been talking to the media, Time, Fortune, NBC, etc., to explain how the onslaught on science and NIH will impact the health of all Americans. Everyone knows someone who has cancer, heart disease, or depression. Spread the word about how cutting science impacts all. time.com/7216299/nih-...

I'm preparing a pub quiz for a retreat with students and my "current affairs" round is just this image:

This thread makes an important point! When talking to Representatives or the media, focus on the health and economic impact. Republican members are usually terrified of China winning — this hands them biomedical supremacy on a platter.

The federal civilian worker payroll totaled $271 billion in 2022. The annual cost of permanently extending Trump's tax cuts that primarily benefited rich individuals? $400 billion. Keep this in mind as Trump and DOGE lay off thousands of federal workers.

Strong rumor with credible sourcing: DOJ has put all of public integrity line attorneys in a room and told them they have an hour for someone to choose who will sign motion to dismiss and if nobody does, they will all be fired. The nastiest strong-arming in DOJ history by a long shot.

Happy International Day of Women in Science. The National Science Foundation’s list of flagged words includes both “Women” and “Female.”

We should talk more about where the US gov't gets huge value for taxpayer money. Take NIH study section: they get 25-30 expert PhD consultants to each spend 40-50 hours scrutinizing grant apps (incl 2 solid days of group discussion) and they pay them ~half of DC minimum hourly wage. And no coffee

How to get 146% return on investment? The NIH. That's just the economic benefit. Biomedical research promotes human health.

Absolutely incredible

Mark my words, they are coming for tenure. If you aren't a fan of the @aaup.bsky.social you should get on board. They don't want institutions of higher learning to exist because we teach people how to think for themselves. Nothing frightens a weak man more than knowledge.

Scientists, in their purest form, are interested only in truth, capable of self-criticism along with respectful but fierce disagreement with peers, and willing to sacrifice comfort in pursuit of these values So you can see why, in being so opposite of the people now in power, they become the enemy.

it's truly crazy how the trump administration is launching openly racist purges of women, POC, LGBTQ+ people, etc. everywhere they can, and the media is still covering it as a tussle over "DEI". wake the fuck up

Charlie Angus, a member of Canada's Parliament, suggested placing tariffs on Elon Musk's "douche Panzer" should Trump follow through on his plans.

anyone else feel like this? youtu.be/ukr3Y3unFhg?...

Absolutely. I am sure kinds emails would be appreciated. From my experience both as a PI and as an NIH colleague, these "government bureaucrats" are hard-working, committed folks trying to help make American science the best it can be.

Rescinded

If Canadian universities had a bit of vision, they would be launching a Manhattan project to poach every US-based top researcher. And the federal government would be drastically expanding tri-council funding and creating an expedited review process for those holding NSF and similar grants.

Academic workers across the country are organizing to call on our congressional representatives on Thursday, 1/30, at 3pm ET / 12pm PT to demand these restrictions be lifted immediately. There will be a training over zoom at the beginning of the event. Join us! form.jotform.com/250226137228...

What’s really shocking is to imagine a future in whichy we may have a nominee for defense secretary so utterly shameless that they could spout FOX propaganda *without* downing three strong gin-and-tonics by 10 am.

Greenland is ready

Moving your lab to another institute

NIH funding generated $2.46 for every $1 funded in 2023. Important info for scientific advocacy in the years ahead- science is a quantifiable investment, not just a cost. H/t to @nicolecrust.bsky.social for sharing! #AcademicSky #PsychSciSky #NeuroSkyence www.fiercebiotech.com/research/rep...

In case some individuals still believe that what we do is … a waste of money!🤔🧪👇 www.fiercebiotech.com/research/rep...
